My mate has a laptop and he asked me to take a look at it. It shows a charge and the adapter lights up green when given mains power. But the machine will make a click noise from i presume to be the HDD and will attempt to boot, fail and then reboot cycle until the power is removed.

And while doing this there is nothing on the screen. It is pure black so i cannot see what i am doing without linking it via VGA to a monitor. It this even worth doing and could i fix it for him without that much hassle?

I suspect it is the board due to having nothing on the screen?

If there is no image on the screen and he did nothing stupid like flash the system bios before this happened then yeah his motherboard is toast.

Could be a simple fix like the screen connector on the board is a little loose. You can normally access them by removing the keyboard. All laptop dependant though, thats for the screen anyway.

Cheers lads i agree with the board or HDD or screen connector. The HDD clicks when it tries to reboot and does the reboot cycle. But surely a dead HDD would still show a post error? As i said the screen seems dead nothing but a blank turned off screen.

Its a few years old like im just taking a quick look at it for him.

Make a bootable USB stick, that'll tell you if it's the motherboard or HDD. I swapped out a laptops HDD this afternoon, first time and easier than I thought.
