It's just as Boomstick777 stated, purely for gaming then no; get a better GPU or bigger SSD to hold more games. Though if you really can't assuage the upgrade itch then X99 is most likely way to go for all the extra stuff you get vs the outlay.

If you have an i7 2600k overclocked to at least 4.4Ghz you will be wasting your money buying anything Intel has brought out after Sandy Bridge for gaming?
Yes or no?
pretty much except for m.2 pci-e SSD;s they are getting very fast and prices are reasonable.
skylake is without doubt the most reasonable upgrade from sandy (compared to ivy/haswell/broadwell) it has the most tech improvements but yes ultimately an SSD and sandybridge on a Z77 motherboard is more than enough for general use and gaming.
You don't upgrade for the extra 5 fps, you upgrade for everything else (features).
This pretty much sums it up for me personally.
The chip itself was a monster, its the bells and whistles of the mainboard that force you to upgrade.
Saying that my lovely other half has ones of these with a 770, she's playing the new Witcher as we speak with no problems at all!

Skylake overall does not look much faster but for some reason in GTA V it is a big upgrade.
What's wrong with expecting both new features and a nice jump in performance? You don't upgrade for the extra 5 fps, you upgrade for everything else (features).

Is getting a bit slow now, for example GTA V where it is about 25-30% slower, but yes it is decent enough. I don't think I will upgrade my 4690k until prob 10nm, especially as DX12 will make CPU's effectively faster.
Yes that is more than enough but how the market is going with VR, Ray Tracing and whether or not that will affect things in the future is still unknown. But an i7 Sandy Overclocked will be enough, not so much an i5 now.

Where does the 25-30% increase in GTA V come from? Is that 4K or multi monitor/multi gpu or something? I did want to do a full upgrade for Christmas but it’s just not worth it from anything I’ve seen so far. In any of the benches I’ve seen the difference between i7-2600 and i7-6700 in GTA V is around 7% max and that's with the 2600 at stock (and as low as 1% with some gpus/resolutions).

7% is not insignificant but it’s hardly worth a full mobo + cpu + everything else upgrade for. Surely for most gamers the money would be better spent on buying the best gpu you can afford instead?

They're all at 4.4GHz![]()
