Can you be a part time MMORPGer?

These days I don't have the time (or the inclination) to spend 5 hours a night every night playing an MMORPG; I could maybe spend 5-7 hours a week if I'm lucky what with work, sports, friends, a life etc.

That said I've been watching DC Universe Online for quite a while. I'm a massive DCU fan and from what I've read of impression from the BETA, both the game and story seem pretty solid and inline with DC story lines.

I used to play WoW when it first came out but lost interest with the constant grinding after about 5 months (and a few non sick sick days).

So my question is, if I do buy DCUO and an only able to play it "part time" will I still be able to enjoy the game or will I be left behind by the uber addicted 12 years olds that can play from 4-2am every day?

Thoughts?

I don't understand why anyone would invest so much time in a game when they could do something more worthwhile like perfect a musical or improve their fitness / sporting ability.

*looks at own post count*

I think it's impossible to be a part time gamer of any online game. Sure you can play CoD for a few rounds every now and then, but you're still going to be made mincemeat of by all the kids who play non stop. Same goes for MMORPGs on a much bigger scale. You are only as good as the amount of time you put in. If you play every now and then you will have a low level character for a very long time, while others are all high levels as they play them non stop. If it's your first time playing an mmorpg, be warned you could get addicted without even realising. "Just another level!" "Just going to finish this quest". It never stops.

You could find an MMO who is more inclined towards solo play like Guild Wars for example. Maybe research a bit on DC Universe and see what ppl are saying, I havent played WoW in about 3 years since I don't have the time because of uni and work but if you compare WoW to how it used to be pre-bc to how it is now. It's 100x more casual friendly.

+ I don't think the trick is not playing 5 hours a day, the trick is not caring that you have the sword of babylonia +5dps and the guy who just ran past you has the sword of superamazingdestruction +7dps. ^_^

Same goes for MMORPGs on a much bigger scale.

Entirely depends on the MMORPG, some had a large element of skill in them which meant that you didn't need to grind that much but only needed to level up a bit and then just rely on your skill (UO of old for PVP for one)

well with wow i can go a couple of days playing for around 8 hours then go 3 days without playing it, sure you get left behind a little but i still enjoy playing still plenty of people around my level.

Sorry, I totally disagree.
I play WOW but on an entirely casual basis. I doubt I play more than 5 or 6 hours a week, if that yet I still enjoy it and can still hold my own in groups.
I don't raid as that is where it becomes almost career-like, but I am happy with the level of involvement I have.

Maybe it's because I don't like being a lowbie. I played WoW in the vanilla pre-TBC times (imo, the high point of WoW was 1.12.1, I miss those days :( ) so maybe I can't speak for how the game has changed now. For low levels all there was, was brain-numbing amounts of grinding, and then every now and then have some PvP on battlegrounds, but you don't really wanna spend too long on PvP, otherwise you'll never level up to the more interesting parts of the game. I ended up playing non stop, just to get out of the lowbie zone, and by that point I ended up giving up on the game as it took my life over.

Saying that I'd still like to play again, but it would be as a casual gamer. I've just not bothered as I don't think it would be worth it. Given that I no longer have an account, as I sold it back when people used to sell accounts.

I play mmo's pretty casualy, sure people will level faster then you but who cares as long as your having fun.
Some People play football better then me but i don't feel the need to pratice 12 hours a day to beat them

Just have kids, then you won't have a choice :)

As said above though, it depends entirely on the mmo. Eve Online, if you want to play it as it's meant to be played, you need to dedicate some serious time to it.

Wow, DDO, Lotro, and most of the other themepark mmo's, you can dip in an out of as you please. You might exclude yourself from end-game content depending on the game and requirements, but let's face it, you're going to months getting to that stage anyway. I've played mmo's non-stop for over a decade without ever getting seriously into end-game in any of them.

wow is much more newbie friendly they way cata has changed 1-60 is amazing i have never got beyond level 35 before but came back once again with the changes of cata and got to 66 and loved the new quests.

For me I don't like that idea. Sure I love the parts of the game I have witnessed, but everyone says end-game is the best yet I have never experienced it on anything other than private servers.

Hmm interesting! I wanna try it out now but scared I'll become addicted again.

Best ask in the Games forums.
Dam it, though I had posed in the games section. Thanks mods for moving.

Maybe you're right, I do have that musical some nobody called Lloyds-Webber asked me to finish for him :P

I will never go back to WoW for that very reason!

Thanks for all the input guys, it's interesting how polorised peoples views are.

Also the advert in the top right as I type this might be a sign from the gaming gods

If the gaming gods are the rich fat cats that own Blizzard/OcUK/Razer then yes

While we're on the subject, would anyone say WoW is still playable with just the original WoW game? I don't own any expansions and fancy playing the trial.

yes because with the original you still get to experience the new 1-60 you don't need any expansions till you get to 60 unless you want to use the new races but that isn't needed to enjoy it.

This idea that you cannot play an MMO without investing 40 hours a week is an absolute crock, with the exception of Darkfall Online. Plenty of good MMOs out there, I'd go for something level based, however EVE Online may be another good option with it's offline skill training, really depends on what your after, but I can't think of any MMO that requires 40 hours of play a week, unless your dedicated to doing absolutely everything...
