Can you buy chemicals??

i thought anything more reactive than potassium has to be stored in some type of oil. Things such as francium and cesium are highly radioactive arnt they?

Id still like to chuck some francium into some concentrated hydrochloric acid

I loved chemistry at school, Id have rather done 3 lessons of chemistry and not done biology or physics at all.

they are all stored in oil.

i've put a tiny tiny amount of sodium in conc sulphuric acid - its really pops.

we also have a really old bottle of potassium (about a kilo or so) that my prof was to scared of cutting up and disposing of - apparently when it gets old potassium sparks when cut.

i think i'll leave it where it is :p

Lithium? Not by a long way. Cesium is far and away more reactive.

As said above, Francium is the most reactive.

It's not quite that straightforward, as more than one thing is happening. The explosion is mainly caused by the hydrogen being liberated, which lithium is actually best at, weight-for-weight. But it does it too slowly for a proper explosion. Best compromise is sodium. For those who weren't yet aware, the explosions in Brainic for caesium and francium actually involved explosive charges, because the real reaction was poorer than potassium.

I've got a kilo of sodium (in oil) in the garage. I used to work at a waste disposal firm and brought it home to have fun with. It's been sitting there ten years.

Getting hold of concentrated Nitric acid is difficult. Sulphuric acid of adaquate strength can be obtained for Lead acid battery refills but nitric is harder. Then you just need a good quality ice-bath and some simple home chemicals. Glycerin, cellulose, toluene etc. When you order this stuff make sure you order the amonium nitrate seperately.... :p

Garden centres are good places. Sodium chlortae weed killer, nitrate based fertilisers, big sacks of charcoal.

Hi GCHQ ;)

Never watched a braniac show in my life. Been to plenty of demonstrations of various sciencey things and watched educational videos on the subject though. Cant see them all faking it. Potassium in water was nowhere near as spectacular as Caesium.

i agree - i've seen cesium in water and it really does bang - its a LOT more reactive to water than potassium.

a few years ago, i was maybe 17, i bought some potassium permanganate which someone told me was good for treating blisters(worked too :))

i didnt have to show ID or anything, later on i found that it was highly flamable and after some googling i found it could be used in explosives... :(

Hope your insurance company knows about it :p If there's a fire in your house, it is going to make a big crater in the neighbourhood :p

you know that if you put a little postassium permangenate in your mouth when drunk you will pass a breathalyser test - not very heathly though (- i haven't tried it)

more fun if you mix it with ethylene glycol and let it dry out. :D ..

Pot permanganate + Glycerin= flamy fun.

hmmm, i didn't know either of the above were so sensitive to strong oxidising agents - i might try one of those tomorrow - i've definitely got ethylene glycol and there should be some permanganate lying around somewhere.

search youtube for ''water and sodium'', some guy bid on 1kg of Sodium and threw chunks into his private lake
hehe sodium is tame, but 1 kg for francium, is something a bit special
