Can you cancel Sky and sign back up at the same address as new customer?

I know someone that has done this for the last three years, if not pushing five years now.

To the point they will tell him he will not get offered half price line rental again, the guy on the phone insisting that he will make sure that no offers are made.

Two days later he was contacted by sky asking him if he would change his mind if they cut his line rental in half for 12months :)

Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows the answer to the above?

If I can cancel my Sky subscription at the end of the 12 months and then sign back up as a new customer to take advantage of any offers I see knocking around?
You can, but as mentioned it would be against the terms you agreed to when you joined Sky.

They have basic procedures to check if you are a current or recently cancelled customer. These usually involve searching through information they have about older accounts, although how many checks are performed usually varies on even the advisor level (as in, it can vary from person to person).

Not anymore. They used to but recently a lot of people have just being told "see you"

Only do this if you are prepared to go through with it.

Tbh if I lived in a Virgin area I would be with them and not Sky anyway.
I would be sure you are actually speaking to the Retention department, as the people you are dealing with there would probably earn commission on each 'save' they make. Unless of course you came off as very unpleasant and/or unwilling to change your mind.

How is it fraud?

If he uses the same name, same address, etc.. or his significant others name, then its up to Sky to accept the contract or not.
I wouldn't quite use a term as strongly as fraud, but it is nonetheless stipulated against in the terms you agree to when you first join (even in other people's names or what-not). Setting up a new account is largely fine when at a different address however.

Exactly. New customer does not mean new address or they wouldn't accept them
I think you're conflating corporate (as in what BSkyB's actual policy is) and personal (as in what the individual person you are dealing with understands these policies to be and what he gains by signing you up) levels here.

I always think its disgusting that you see offers like free installation, new hd box, 2nd box all free blah blah blah but as an existing customer of 10 years "yes, sir you want an HD box, that will be £100 plus fitting. 2nd box another £200 plus £10 per month"
Sky's official line would be that you would be ineligible for that offer having taken a similar one before (i.e. when you joined).

Dont forget to check Quido too, sometimes massive cash back offered

Ive just cancelled with the thought of getting the wife to go back at a later date
We are going to see how we go without it for a few month, it is just terrible for repeats and reruns.
Ive always said aswell if you aint seen it by the time its on sky you aint that bothered about it in the first place

Always found Sky very helpful. Been with them for just over two years, always had movies but did cancel sports initally - have taken it back now for the NFL.

Don't really feel the need to get something from them every year.

I would say this though, they are going to need to continue evolving Sky Movies. The anytime feature was a step in the right direction, however something like Netflix is about the same price and offers quite a bit more from what I can see.

When did you leave?

The channel launched in March 2012, and from a quick google they were saying exactly this as early as December 2011

I left before then, pretty much after the F1 Season finished. I still wouldn't have taken the HD offer in any case - I don't like the idea of having to buy something you don't want in order to buy something you do.

virgin media gave me free installation and 20 off my first bill because i rang up complaining and saying i wanted to cancel as it was ridiculously expensive to charge me for installation when i already had the correct connections from a previous time

I hate to say it but the original price of the HD box without the 12 month HD subscription was £499. EVERY customer gets an offer of some sort when they first sign up. Free Install? Full price is £120. Some might pay half price or free but the actual full price is £120. How about a HD box Sir? No problem. You don't want to take a Sky Subscription of any sort? You just want the box installed? Of course we can do that Sir. That's £299 and £120 install. How would you like to pay?

While it may not exactly be fraud it's certainly misrepresentation. Sky may not bother checking for accounts where there's nothing owing but they DO keep track of accounts being activated at the same address with outstanding bills and have been known to actively block these accounts from going active.

Oh yes for the same person to be considered a 'new' customer they would need to be without Sky for 12 months.

Different name, different bank account number, email might do it.
When I moved house I used those and address and got new box, £150 cash back, £50 vouchers and better subscription. :-)

I have noticed recently that companies seem a bit less willing to give you handouts when you threaten to leave. Vodafone gave me the 'see you later' speech while I had to backtrack with virgin, because I didn't want to go to sky and have to get a white trash dish on my wall.

Just today I rang Orange to find out how much it would be to end my contract 4 months early, whilst it was only out of curiosity and I had no intention of doing it the guy offered me £12 off my bill each month! He completely talked himself into it at well :p

I got a 1/2 price sky for 12 months though work (I don't work for Sky, but the company I work for does work for them).

I have no intention of paying full price, so will cancel after the 12 months. Will try and open a new account in someone else's name.

You can;t as yourself but you can with your other half.

Me and my gf do the Sky shuffle every 12 months :D

Just what I wanted to hear.

She's got a 2 months left on her contract with them at her current place and we move in together at the end of the month so Sky are moving the subscription over to our new place, then we're going to cancel and sign back up as there is usually some good cashback/M&S vouchers/discounted line rental deals going on.

I only want it for Broadband/Phone Line anyway. We don't watch enough TV to warrant a SKY TV subscription.
The area is a Virgin area as it happens, but the flats we are moving into aren't cabled up it seems so its ADSL2 all the way.

Love that my sky went off last week after I cancelled and yesterday i get a 50% off letter for a year offer and £50 paid on my bill to come back.

Shows you that you are just a number to them, they dont care what you pay for your TV as long as you are "with them"

Got nothing near that offer from retentions
