I cant. But Im 16 so its acceptable. :)

edit: in response to the post above: i can cook most of THOSE things. I cant prepare a meal from the basic ingredients.

Acceptable? Why?

"Cooking" implies starting from basic ingredients surely? Who does your cooking for you?

Every one should be able to make
A roast
Mash
Spag Bol

From those 3 simple dishes you can create hundreds of dishes.

Have done those 3 many a time, I usually keep some pasta sauce in the freezer aswell.

I could cook those 3 that Acidhell said when I was 15 :p

I can't cook that well yet, but i really want to be able to cook decent meals :) I can do some basic one's at the moment, and have advanced beyond the 'heating up' stage of cooking :p

I've got a very well equipped kitchen now, so i don't really have any excuses!

I can make Spaghetti Bolognaise, Curry, Casserole, Fish, Roasts and various cakes all from scratch. With stuff like cakes I usually need the ingredients list[for the quantities] unless it is something I make often... like flapjacks :D

Stuff like eggs [fried/boiled/scrambled], bacon, sausage [and other fry-up related foods] steak, chips and so on I have been able to cook since I was 10.

It really is shocking how many people there are who struggle to cook an egg!

I couldn't until I realised I'd reached the age of 25 and was living mainly from microwave/freezer meals. Nowadays I make everything from scratch using fresh stuff and feel way healthier for it :)

I'm a very good cook,

I dont see any excuse not to be able to make a basic meal from basic ingredients,

I cant remember the last time i ate a ready meal or similar, I like to know exactly what as gone into my food and where it came from

I wouldn't say it's acceptable, cooking is basic survival, what do they teach you at school's these days. food science wasn't good when I was there but at least it taught the basics.

I can make mash and spag bol from that small list, but I've never tried/needed to make a roast so I cant say I could do it.

I'm a student, living away from home. Last year was all micro meals, but this year I've mainly been cooking for myself. To be honest I cant wait to get my own kitchen to gain some more skills :D

Short answer, no, but I'm trying to learn.

Over the last couple of weekends I've made Chicken/Beef Satey dishes, which have gone down rather well, though the beef 1 was a bit chewy :o

Also made some sausage rolls, which I must say were excellent.

I'd love to try more, but it's hard finding a place with idiot guides.

Yeap i can......almost any of dish/cooking style. My imagination is my limit. One of the things my gf like about me. :)

They teach us how to make salsa, a basic cake and pizza in year 9 at my school, and food technology is an option at year 10 for GCSE.

Most people my age cant cook. There are about 5 people who can cook properly that I know of, which is why I think it is acceptable.

My mum cooks, not me. :p

If cheese on toast, cheese in pita bread, sandwiches, microwave meals count I can make stuff.

I cook basic foods and enjoy it but generally steer clear of anything overly fussy or with masses of prep work. My Spaghetti Bolognese is unbeatable :).

I'd say I can follow a receipe but I can't really, I look at it for the basics and then generally go off and do my own thing to a degree. It is partly because I can't be bothered measuring exactly but mainly because I tend to forget the exact order as I go along so I start to make it up and it generally turns out pretty well. I don't cook from scratch all that often though as I just lack the motivation. :)

Can your parents or grandparents cook? Best way of learning is to cook meals with them.

I learned most meals from my mum. Also you don't really need an idiots guide to cooking. If you hear or see something you like the sound of, go find a recipe and give it a shot. Depending on how you liked it you can change the recipe to suit your taste. You shouldn't worry too much about exact quantities of ingredients either - the only time that matters is for baking.

You should see me make a curry or spag bol. Stuff just gets launched into the pan by the handful. :D
