Can you FEEL the difference on a cheap upgrade?

I think people worry too much about VERY basic mods and their insurance premium. Do you really think that adding a cone filter is gonna put more than about £20 on your policy cost??!

HIGHLY depends on your insurance company. Tesco for instance wanted some £130 for a induction kit from K&N on my Civic VTI, another £100 for a stainless backbox. Greenlight on the hand wanted nothing for a 50bhp gain, nothing for bigger wheels, nothing for bigger brakes, nothing for anything I could chuck on the policy. Crazy

I think these kinds of breathing mods can help make the engine rev more easily, your'll feel that but it only equate to a torque increase at best. Theres little power gain usually.
I got extra 10mph on the top speed on my route home, not because it really increased the top speed but because it got there more easily and that was just a less restrictive exhaust.

1hp increase is something you'll see just from driving first thing on a cold morning, just when the grips worst you get the most power :/

I've just added a K&N panel filter to the standard airbox and also fitted a much less restrictive Piper cold air feed too. It's on a Vectra 2.2 SRi shown below.

Now, it sounds quiter on idle, throatier on acceleration and also feels like it revs a lot faster too. I'm assuming any noticable gain is pyschological due to the increase in noise it makes. You can't really detect an increase of 1hp on the road can you?

Get it re-mapped (chipped) you should then feel a difference.

I only really replaced the filter because the old one was minging. I couldn't be bothered to tune this anyway as it's merely a reliable, comfortable hack for work. Coming from a Saab 9-5 Aero I think I need a bit more than a remap to get the power I would ideally like.

You will probably get hardly anything out of a remap too as its a non-turbo 2.2 petrol right?
Correct. Currently performance isn't on the list of things I want right now hence the type of car I've got.

ive had both a K&N panel filter on mine and now an Apexi cone filter. i much prefer the cone filter, but the panel filter is a cheap easy upgrade which does create a bit more noise. i picked one up 2nd hand for like £25 quid so it was a bargain!

when looking at these check your MAF, some have a tendancy to blow if an oil based filter is used as bits of oil do get pulled into the intake. if its a hotwire you should be fine.

if not maybe check out a dry foam/steel version - these dont filter as well but wont contaminate your maf!

replacement panel filters won't give you the induction roar of an open cone, especially if you are still using the stock airbox.

made bugger all difference to sound on my GT4, but I gained about 7hp.

Nice flame. Shame it just turned around and burnt you becuase he's merely photoshopped out 2 characters to stop his car being recognised from the picture.

Shame because he was wasting his time.

I would say that it is possible to feel the difference on a cheap upgrade, definitely.

My second car was a Peugeot 205 1.4 GT, (single-point injection), all I did was put a cone filter in the original air filter housing.

It wasn't a drop-in-the-box filter, it was just bolted on upside down. It made a considerable difference, definitely accelerated quicker from idle which was very noticeable.

On the other hand I've bought loads of air filters for various different cars that I've owned and have not noticed any difference with some of them.
