On my HTPC i have front access usb ports. however i have no internal usb 3 headers..they are only usb 2. Is it possible to connect a cable to the USB 3 rear I/O ports, route them into the case and connect to the USB ports at the front via the header connectio?

you can get internal usb3 to internal usb2 adapters. They come with silverstone cases as an example.

google image search "internal usb3 to usb2"

yes, my case is a silverstone and i have one of those. i am thinking of getting a usb 3 memory stick and that is why i wanted a USB 3 front port. if this wont work i will just run a usb cable from around the back of the HTPC that i can connect my stick to

I think you want something like this.

I'm sure I've seen the same sort of cables for less, but OcUK's very basic search system makes finding this sort of thing difficult, and linking to anywhere external is obviously not an option.

This will do usb2 speeds

for 3 i would just get a usb3 cable and run it around from the back to keep the inside tidy.

It's a sad day when keeping the inside of the case tidy becomes more important than having unnecessary external cables trailing about.

The only reason to worry about what the inside of the case looks like is the case window, and they're so passé.

that is the very cable i looked at. I did not know if it would work from USB 4 pin port > header port male+header female > USB 4 pin > USB flash drive. I thought (i may be wrong) it was something for producing male USB 4 pin ports from the header.

I am not sure

The cable linked converts two external USB 3.0 ports into a single 19 pin USB 3.0 header you'd usually find on a motherboard. If your case has a 19 pin plug connected to its USB 3.0 front ports then it should so what you want.

USB 2.0 uses 4 pins for it's connection, USB 3.0 uses 9 pins for each connection.

i missed out 'htpc'

thats just a shove it all in reasonably tidily job.

disagree on case windows being old fashioned!

Thats exactly what i want it to do.
Atm my front usb 3 ports go to a 19pin header that converts to a usb header that plugs into the usb2 header.

Ill give it a go
