you get a new contract with the same provider via mobiles.co.uk

basically i want a new phone and was offer, 600mins unlimited texts and the phone i want c905, for 30quid a month 18month contract from orange.

however.......

I've seen the exact same thing on mobiles.co.uk but you also get a free DS lite or Auto 120quid cashback, thing is can i just get the new contract through mobiles.co.uk but still keep my number? I was gonna phone orange up and ask but i don't no how clued up they will be on the website etc.

Or will it be easier/stupider to cancel my contract as its expired, get the new contract then get my PAC code and give the same company (hahaha) the code to keep my number.

I hope people understand what am on about haha

Sure can.

You will need to get a "temporary" new number with the new people. Phone Orange for a PAC code; they'll either give it to you there and then or post it - you'll then need to contact your new network and say you want to transfer your number across and give them the pac code. It'll take 2-3days to take effect :)

no, networks generally wont port numbers within themselves.
i.e. you can port from Orange to O2/virgin/T-Mobile/etc, but you cannot port from Orange to Orange

u've still gotta get the pac code even though its with the same company, as i'll still be sticking with orange, so its not like am going from orange to o2.

ill be upgrading my contract soon and getting a new phone still with orange deos this mean i wont be able to keep my number as im already on an orange contract?

I recently ported an O2 contract number to an O2 mobiles.co.uk contract with success. I was told I could do it as the two contracts were on different 'billing systems'.

I also ported from O2 to O2 without too many problems.

SS has your new tarriff been recognised yet? I keep sending texts to 21202 and it comes back with wonfusion still (showing my old billing date and 0txts and mis).

Edit: seems not, they appear to have ******** up my transfer, guess who i'm ringing tomorrow...

allow me to clear this up for you orange will not let you port through the dealer as its called a back door upgrade, they want you to upgrade direct through them which is why they wont do it. However if you go on PAYG keeping the same numer register it then go from PAYG to contract they will let you do it as a loop hole at the present time

all networks will let you transfer from PAYG to Pay Monthly within the same network
simply take out the contract and ring afterward to arrange to have the number transferred without a PAC

Networks will not allow you to transfer a number from one contract to another on the same network as it's pointless in their eyes, might as well upgrade.

Occasionally, as is the case with CPW and Mobiles.co.uk, you can use a PAC code within the same network. This is because they have their own billing arrangements and you are essentially on an MVNO which offers the same tariffs as O2, but handles your billing separately.

If you are dealing with a third party, i.e. mobiles.co.uk, simply telling them you want to keep your number makes no difference as independent companies have no access to your billing info

from what I've been told by some one at cpw, they no longer handle the billing for o2 contracts bought through them(or their affiliate sites). its all dealt with by o2.

with orange as has already been said, you can't use a pac code to port your number to a new contract. your only option is to change your contract(once it expires) to payg, then buy the new contract and transfer the number from the payg to the new contract.

I've read over on o2 forums(linked through the buying from mobiles.co.uk thread on the xda forums) that o2 allow you to transfer your number from your current contract to your new contract, don't have the link to hand right now.

New contracts from Oct 07 (I think) are all with O2 Directly, anything previously was with CPW O2.

Existing CPW O2 customers are being kept on the CPW base (unless they upgrade to an iPhone, then they automatically get PACced accross)

Summary:

1. PAYG->Pay Monthly, same network: Can carry number, no need for PAC code.
2. PAYG->Pay Monthly, different networks: Can carry number, need a PAC code
3. Pay Monthly -> Pay Monthly, same network: Can only carry number using PAC code in a very limited set of circumstances, none of which concern Orange.
On Orange, you cannot use PAC code to carry your old Orange number to a new Orange contract.

Option A: Switch old Orange contract to PAYG, switch back to Pay Monthly on new contract
Option B: Get a PAC code, port out to a different network, go straight back to Orange.

But either way, Orange allow you to port a number into the new contract any time (unlike Voda) so you can sort all this out even after buying the new phone.
