I have an old xbox 360 which does not have a HDMI output, loaded with April 2010 dashboard.
My TV supports resolutions up2 1080p 24/50/60hz & I tested a friends Elite xbox with HDMI & it worked at 1080p, so the TV is ok.

Im using a VGA cable atm but this only allows resolutions up2 1360x768
Any resolution selected above that & the TV goes blank with an error message saying 'out of range'.

Is there an adapter which provides a HDMI output so 1080p will work?
Also needs optical too.

thanks

You should be able to do 1080p over component and select 1920x1080 over VGA. Its more likely your Tv does not support it and can only do 1080p over HDMi...

Ahh, ive been googling this & apparantly a VGA cable cant manage 1080p at 60hz.
Theres a display port to female HDMI adapter for the 360 but it has no optical, im still looking...

The TV is a Sharp LC46LE700E .
I found this in the instructions pdf:

HDMI: 480i/480p/576i/576p/720p/1080i/1080p
ANALOGUE RGB: 576p/720p (50 Hz)/1080i
The ANALOGUE RGB (PC) terminal (EXT 4) is not compatible
with 480i/576i/1080p signals.

You will need to use the HDMi input to get 1080p support. If you are only using it for games you will notice little difference using 720p over 1080p.

Im just finding out that a lot of games dont even run at 1920x1080 anyway

There is only a handfull of true 1080p games. Most of the games are barley 720p and are upscaled with AA to smooth them out. The 360 is just not powerfull enough for mainstream 1080p gaming.

Indeed, since 90%+ of games aren't internally rendered at 1080p, you might as well just use Component set at 720p..

You could always trade your 360 in, and put a little extra money to a secondhand 120GB Elite with HDMI (Make sure you get a late 2009/early 2010 manufactured model)..

Nor is the PS3, there are very few 1080p games on either system and most of the ones that are can be found on the XBLA/PSN. Fortunately the 360 has a pretty good upscaler, can't say the same about my PS3.

I personally use 1080p on my monitor over VGA with my non-HDMI 360 but it seems your TV doesn't support 1080p in anything other than HDMI, which is pretty common I have found.
