Can you ping by port number?

Hi all,

I understand that you can ping by hostname and IP address etc.. to check connectivity.

But I'd like to know if I can do the same thing but to check the connectivity for a Particular Port number..

Or just use telnet to see if you get a connection, a refused connection or a time out. E.g. telnet www.bbc.co.uk 80
