Hey folks, question...

We are doing a favor for a friend's office, they basically use WiFi at the moment at there is a two floor gap between them and the upstairs office.

It works fine, however, they need the downstairs office to be wired, patch panels are not an option due to cost.

We tried using powerline (plug) adaptors, and whilst we managed to get it to work, the speed was unbearably slow!

So the plan is this (it is only needed to be a temporary 6 month at most job) could we do this;

1) Purchase a Wireless Extender/Repeater which has a LAN Port

2) Plug an 8 port switch into the LAN Port of the extender.

3) Feed LAN cables from the switch to each PC

Is that a workable scenario? If so, are there any particular extenders you would recommend?

I'd be surprised if the WiFi link was much better to be honest, if cost is an issue can you not just run a single cable via some utility ducting, there must be some pre-existing holes somewhere between the floors.

I know what you mean, unfortunately due to the distance wiring is not really an option because the floor inbetween is an issue.

Oddly, with them using WiFi its actually quick even though the router is on the top floor, which is why I thought using a WiFi repeater could solve the issue.

The powerlines we found did not work on most of the plug sockets and the one it did was just beyond slow.

It sounds like you want wireless bridge.

You may get away with using the existing router for one end, it'll depend on what it supports.

There's loads of information out there if you Google it.

Yes it will work but you need you wifi to run in a mode called Client.

It will recive the wifi singal and then allow acess over the LAN.

My personaly recomendation on this is TP-LINK. Cheap and works.

TP-Link TL-WA701ND 150Mbps Wireless-N Access Point
&
TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8 Port Gigabit Switch

Gig switch as an investment. If they ever transfer between on thew lower least it will be quick.

The switch with the AP pluged in will give you 7 working ports total.

I've done this setup loads and using the likes of a corner reflector across sites for distance or up/downwards to get through the buildings.

All plug and play as well, you will nbeed to set a static ip on pc/laptop to set up the TP-Link TL-WA701ND, i also advise using latest FW. So flash then setit up. Knwoing the exactly detials of the wifi above will help too and being present to setup is a must.

Hope this helps
