Can you still buy bass' ? >.O

yes, willhub dont underestimate the ability of the tumult series becuase they look plain, they are very very good drivers. Remember you'd still have to design and build the box correctly, that means using the TS parameters and inputing those numbers into some software to model the cabinet (the name of a free program escapes me ATM). With any speaker things have to be built pretty exact if you want the best out of them.

id also suggest a plate amp from BKelec such as the bsbp200
http://www.bkelec.com/Modules/bsbp200.htm

tumult + bsbp200 + properly designed and built enclosure = one hell of a HT sub. Little expensive though. Again, its close to $550. the shiva or tempest would possibly be better choices i think.

how much is the tumult sub?, and how much better is it than the z5500 sub, z5500 sub dont shake downstairs, just makes the doors rattle, would the tumult sub be able to do damage, or go louder etc.. of course i dont wanna do damage, just trying to compare it to the z5500, like how louder is the bass, 10x louder? etc..

its just i dont want to be ending up turning the tumult sub up full and it overloading like the z5500 subwoofer. anyway how much is the thing?, those maelstrom subs seem good too.

$550 for the driver....or £378 going by the current rates. plus shipping, plus the material costs and the cost of the amp on top.

Jesus christ man, i said about inbetween 200-400 for a whole setup lol, cant afford that damnd sub, unless i gunna have it on its own lol which would be crap :p

If you're not sure, either demo or if you're buying/building blind go OTT. That is why I mentioned the Contrabass. :)

Any it's not just the volume, but the depth also...and the level of distortion/port noise compared to existing sub/identical volume levels. Anyway you don't want the subwoofer to boom when a feather hits the ground, you want it to complement the other speakers, not overwealm it. If you can hear the subwoofer over the rest of the speakers, or find it blasting out whatever is being played (ie background noise in the countryside) you have it too loud. Buy a sound pressure meter and use your AV Amplifier tones to calibrate.

Don't forget if you move up the ladder of drivers you'll need a good amp. Don't go for the Maelstorm, only to opt for the very cheapest/lowest quality 50W amplifer.

As for the cost, look at £100 for a budget sub £200 for a higher end sub (sub amp panel) drivers £100-£300. No way in hell you'll get quality 5.0 speakers plus sub driver plus sub amp panel for £400, unless you buy second hand.

hmmm, well, ok, i udnerstand about how i dont want the sub to be heard over everyhting, but what if sometimes i want it like that, eg with some bass testers, makes ground shaking bass, what if i would like that sometimes eh?, i would like to find out what the best possible sub i could get is for £50 and for £100 or inbetween.

I'm afraid £50-£100 pretty much limited to boomboxes. Sorry but I wouldn't bother build for that budget. Looking at Yamaha parp woofers, so not worth it over your existing subwoofer.

Perhaps you might get a Shiva and amplifier for £100, second hand...but that is the minimum I would recommend for a good "true" subwoofer.

Oh bass testers, sine waves can fry the voice coils....don't do it. If you're strapped for cash don't want to chuck away the driver in the first week eh?

nah don't bother with those.
If you just want a boomy sub, just tune it (ported) quite high, ~35hz. That'll allow it to play loud. It'll lack depth though.

Those are probably the kind of subs your after having read your posts. They won't neccaserily be very accurate or have good low extension but are bound to shake the floor if you want. Bear in mind most car audio systems use 4ohm speakers and although Hi-Fi type amplifiers can often drive them 4ohm now, they may not like it for long periods at high levels. You may be able to pick up a second hand sub "panel amp" within your budget.

can anyone recommend a good sub for me then, prefrebly 50 to 100 pound, i do want ground shaking really loud bass, but i also want slightly good detail, it would help to know how much better they are than the z5500 sub then i know if i am wasting my money or not.

You would be wasting your money £50-£100, you're not going to get "loud, ground shaking bass with good detail" You'll need to spend around £200 (DIY) to be a worthwhile upgrade, or £400 for a ready made sub.

No point upgrading for a slight improvement...

Save up. :)

Why are people even talking abobut subs? They don't start getting good until you are spending the best part of £500 on one in pre made form.

If you want big boomy bass I assure you that a set of Mission/Kef floorstanders in a small room would provide more than enough when coupled to an amp of reasonable quality. A good AV amp can be picked up second hand for £200 easily, with a set of floorstanders being £100 and the centre and rears for another £100. A sub is the least of your worries if you're spending £400.

umm what you on about, if oyu can hear somthing they aint subwoofers, the home cinema downstairs has a subwoofer, and you sure can hear stuff coming from it, usually subwoofers do make noise lol.

I think he meant if you can hear the subwoofer over your speakers, then it's not a subwoofer. As it's too loud or crossover too high/too much overlapping
