Can you still use a 18mm 2.8 lens for shooting the milky way

I was looking into this today, I have a 17-55 f2.8. I used a calculator (becasue lazy) and on a crop sensor it says I could do a 20 sec exposure at ISO 3200 (60D). So in the right dark spot, or maybe doing exposure to the right and correcting in post if not, you could get a decent shot.

I've not tried yet though. It all sounds easy in theory but when you're out in the dark trying to find the focus and then see what's going on via the camera display it can be frustrating. So jot down a few settings that should be within limits and make sure you're focussing to infinity. On my 17-55 this is just a smidge before the end of its travel if that makes sense.
