Simple and probably stupid question but if a car has been remapped is it easy to put back to standard?

What are the costs, can any dealer do it etc.

I know that some remaps come with your original map on some kind of flash memory so you can swap it back but is that the norm?

TIA

Cool.

Sorry, but just for clarification. Soy if I buy a car which has had a remap by the previous owner, would they revert it for me for free, assuming I took it to the same place? Just talking generally, obviously you can't talk for every company.

I'm not sure it's quite as simple as that for Subaru's at least - as far as I know you can't download a map from the car into the ecutek software.

When I had the Foz mapped the mapper loaded in a generic base map before tweaking it but I don't think that is the same as the map that comes on the car as standard..

What car are you actually talking about here?

Well I'm asking this with Octavia VRS' in mind* as a lot of these seem to be owned by enthusiasts and a fair number have had a remap.

*yeah I know I was talking about A4's and 3 series' but something has probably come up at work which means I'll need to stick with a hatchback

Not sure why you would want to though IMO
Thanks for the info.

Basically I'll be coming from a 75BHP car. Whether its running 180BHP or 210BHP its going to feel OMFG quick to me. For that reason I'd rather have it standard so its "unmodified" with regards to insurance.

Ideally I'd get a completely standard one but just wanted some info incase a nice one at a decent price comes up but has been mapped.

Most don't declare the map anyway...and you can only check if they actually plug your car in to a machine anyway, meaning that the only way you'd be rumbled is if you wrote off the car, fell in to a coma and couldn't accidentally remove the ECU before the inspector came.

Hmmm.... not sure I'd want to risk it tbh.

I've read a couple of stories of vehicle inspectors checking specifically for remaps after an accident.

Anyway IMO 180 BHP would be more than enough for me :o

Thing is, there are now insurers such as A-Plan who will cover remaps for very small premiums - if any at all. So if you shop around you can normally get piece of mind for not a lot more.

Indeed, cost me nothing (other than the £25 admin charge, so I got my 18's put on at the same time) for 50 ponies with Greenlight.
Wouldn't ever advocate not telling your insurance about a remap, especially on something that is well known to be remapped like the Skoda too. They have chucked claims out for less thats for sure.

When you have a revo trial remap in an octy vrs the map reverts back to standard after the trial period. So this suggests that the map can be reverted back somehow?

Just leave the traction control on (ASR) if your a noob to high power though. You will be fine!... or get a standard one like I did. Good luck. :)

If you take it to the place who remapped it at first, providing there a good company ;) they will have the original map and will be able to revert it back to standard.

I wouldn't declare it in the insurance, and even if you do, the extra premium will be worth the extra power imo.

My dads company (see sig) always keeps the original map of the car for situations such as this.

If you find a remapped black vRS I'll swap you for a stock one... ;)
The only one localy I've seen thats worth a look is banana yellow  :p

I'm suprised how few there are within 60 miles of me on autotrader within my budget. 3 in total a rather leggy 53 plate black one, a banana yellow 52 plate with 74k on the clock and a silver 51 plate private sale with 59k which is overpriced, has a tow bar and is due both a service and cambelt change. Slim pickings :(

If you can be patient something will come up... Would you be willing to travel for the right car?

Pants just bought a low/average mileage Silver Briskoda car that was listed at £4.5k. Git. :p

The right car is out there though, and they tend to be cheaper on Briskoda from what I've seen...

Good Luck! :)

I'm in no rush tbh. Theres a bit of a question mark over my job at the moment so until thats resolved I'll be holding fire.

I signed up to Briskoda earlier today and had a look. Looks like a cracker he's bought. A similar one on the same plate is going for £4.5k too but that has over 100k on the clock making his a steal IMO.

As for traveling for the right one, well yes and no. If it was a sale on a forum such as Briskoda where you can get a feel for the car in and out. Chat to the owner, resolve any doubts etc. before having a look then yes I'd travel basically anywhere in the UK. If I was going for a look based on an autotrader ad and a dealer saying "yes sir, its perfect, fantastic condition" then I'd limit myself to around 60 miles or so as from past experience "excellent condition" spans all kind of crap :p

I quite like the yellow colour :o, it's a bit paler (more lemon than banana?) and the vRS just about carries it off. I would have been looking for one this summer too, but a ST200 came up locally so I bought it :D. Thought about one of those instead? Would probably be a couple of years older and a couple of grand cheaper.
