So much for Mercedes engine upgrade, maybe they were just bluffing to lure Ferrari into a false sense of security going forward.

Leclerc should have quite a bit of joy overtaking on that last straight.

Vettel going to zoom off in to the distance and control the race as he did during RB glory days. So excited!
You're excited to see someone zoom off into the distance?

Let's not forget that Ferrari aren't quite as good as the mercs on the long runs regards tyres etc. It's going to be an interesting race for sure, but don't be so quick to discount Merc/Hamilton.

What are you talking about? They said it's a small upgrade, that Ferrari would still have more engine power and that Ferrari would be a real threat now they are at a power track.... what part of that 'upgrade' pre Canada statement was bluffing and which part was bragging about how they'd now compete with Ferrari on power?

This whole season is why I find the fans tiresome, tracks are different, cars work differently on different surfaces, with different corner types, even at different altitudes. Ferrari weren't competitive at all at Monaco... but there is no bigger outlier of a track, they weren't competitive in Barcelona but very few tracks have the same corner to straight ratio. They were straight faster in Bahrain, but they've also gained time on the straights at every single track this year. There was a reason they were faster in Bahrain so there was always a reason to believe Ferrari would be competitive at most of the power tracks. People wrote off the year because the season is front loaded with tracks that with the strengths of Merc/Ferrari this year, favour Merc while pretty much Canada to the end of the season will favour Ferrai more than Mercedes overall.

Well the talk pre-weekend was an upgraded engine so you would assume they were intending to close the gap to Ferrari, which they've failed miserably to do.

In terms of luring Ferrari into a false sense of security, you brag about an upgraded engine, Ferrari get worried, the upgrade turns out to be a damp squid, Ferrari put their own engine development on the back burner thinking they're safe. Mercedes might actually have a significantly better engine waiting in the wings for the latter part of the season but as it stands they look as far away as ever. These are the type of mind games that go on in a sport such as F1, strategy isn't all about what happens on the track on a Sunday afternoon.

If Ferrari can only squeak ahead on a high speed circuit like Montreal (and maybe Monza), they are in trouble. On all the other tracks that don't have a massive high speed straight, Mercedes will murder them.

We knew years ago from Red Bull that being fast in the corners is worth more over the year than being the fastest on the straight. We even had a couple of years where Williams was fast and slippery, fastest in the speed traps on the straights, but the best they could do was fourth in the championship because being fast in the corners is worth more.

How do you know that they haven't closed the engine gap a little and that Ferrari just have less drag/downforce? Hence Ferrari being slower on high downforce tracks.

Anyone else noticed a pronounced step up in everyone, commentators, drivers, team principals using the colour to describe the tyre rather than the soft medium hard this weekend?
I noticed the commentator (I’m not in the UK) mention that yesterday when they showed the 3 tyres on offer before quali.
