Cancelling phone contract - how do I time it?

Probably something basic, but I can't remember how things panned out on previous contract expiries. My T Mobile contract says I need to give 30 days notice of cancellation. My contract expires on 17 Dec. Does this mean I need to inform them of cancellation on 17 Nov? I'm sure in the past when I've gone 2 or 3 months outside my contract (deliberating on which phone to get) I've been able to cancel without problem. Though who knows, I may have been getting stiffed for an extra 30 days without realising it.

What I really want is for their retentions to offer me a decent deal on a Note 2, but I'm happy to move if I have to.

you wont get a deal on note2...and as you say 17th November it is
call them on 17 and they will confirm

Third party sites were starting to drop to about £30 a month with free phone, 300 mins, unlimited texts 1.5Gb data, but they do seem to be creeping up now, presumably with the phone being so popular. Just want them to match it to save me the effort of moving :)

Even though your contract "runs out" on the 17th December it doesn't and you still need to give them 30 days cancellation regardless, as it automatically rolls over to a month by month contract. They're a bunch of sneaky ****ers.

So in theory I'd not be any worse off financially if I cancelled a month early and paid off the remainder of the contract?

You won't have the service for the month you're paying off in advance, ie cancelling on 17th October.

Just call up to cancel on 17th November.

If you cancelled a month early then it would run out on the date it should do. If you cancelled on the day it ran out they would charge you for another 30 days.
