How can this be a sequel when they've changed it to Candyman being what he is because he's a black murdered by police?

Admittedly its been a long time since I watched Candyman but wasnt the original essentially the same thing, in terms of it being racism? A black guy who was murdered for getting a white woman pregnant? All thats essentially changed is that instead of being murdered by white "civilians", its being murdered by (I assume) white police ?
But why change it?

I've only seen the original, and only once but wiki says this;Really?! FFS! Let us enjoy a good horror movie without it having to be 'topical'.
So it's pretty much along similar lines. I'd imagine the original was 'topical' too...the film follows a Chicago graduate student completing a thesis on urban legends and folklore, which leads her to the legend of the "Candyman", the ghost of an artist and son of a slave who was murdered in the late 19th century for his relationship with the daughter of a wealthy white man.

The terrific end credits bring back the shadow-puppet motif to show the endless cycle of violence that leads to different incarnations of Candyman over the decades. What could be more horrifying than that?
