Cannon G7

Images from the G7 are 10 million Pixels, not 10mb :) The actual file size of a Large Super Fine JPEG is 4mb
The camera will benefit from a fast card, but you'll only notice it if you take a lot of shots quick succession, or capture long movie clips.

Ok, I've taken the plunge and ordered one.

What memory card should I be looking to go with this?

I've been looking at the 2gb Sandisk Extreme 3 SD. Is this a good match for a camera like this or should I be looking at something cheaper. I'm guessing the additional speed of the card should help with the 10mb pics.
Let me know if I'm wrong.

Thanks.

i have been using Corsair 60x 2gb cards in mine without problems. It keeps up with the camer no problems and they are cheaper than the Sandisk cards.

Glad you took the plunge - you should be suitably impressed. Dont forget to post first impressions and thoughts when you get it through.

Well............

How are we getting on with it?

need some pics :)

The G7 is a cracking little camera.

I just got a one on Friday...needed a good camera with manual control + good auto/scene modes as I will have to do a lot of travelling for work, and really didn't want to risk the 30D + lenses getting damaged. So far I've only had a brief play, but I think the handling is great and image quality not too bad. IS seems to work fairly well too.

It also seems to work with the iPod camera connector without problem.

I just received a Sandisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card today and it shows as being able to take 1590 shots! (the battery will be dead several times before I fill that up). But that will be useful for some video taking too (30fps VGA). I would personally stick with the Sandisk Ultra and Extreme cards...I have read about problems with lower speed/no name cards.

Actually, there's a thing, has anyone got a recommendation for a high capacity battery?

Set the camera to 10MP JPEG Super-Fine; you'll get better quality photos. That should reduce the shot number to around 960.

How big is the G7, Anyone got or seen any shots of the camera with other compacts for size reference ?

I really fancy one of these for where i dont want to take the SLR but the Optio S is just not good enough !

Next to a Blackberry Pearl and a DS Lite for comparison, i have a F30, but used that to take the pictures.

Two More, compared to the Fuji F30

Best i could do with a cheapo camera with VERY poor flash.

Not really had a chance to take any decent photo's yet, but did have an hour or so to take some in Paris last week. give me some time and I'll put some up.

Well, here we go.
Not really had much of a chance to take many pictures with it yet, but did get a whirlwind trip of paris last week (work trip).

Here's a few of the photos that I took with the G7.
All were taken at high settings and have been scaled/cropped as I saw necessary to put on here.

Hopefully the images are not too big and if anyone has any advice on getting better quality pictures it's more than welcome.

Please excuse the next one, it was taken on a moving bus so theres a bit of reflection on the picture.

Starting to get to grips with it now, but there's so many manual settings compared to my previous point and shoot camera. This is also the first time I've edited photos on my pc too, so please go easy on me.

I like them all except the first and last one. The first one is overexposed a bit and the last one is not so bad but it just didn't do anything for me (from a moving bus is not bad work). Try and get some off centre subjects in there and maybe put some stuff in front of and behind your point of focus just to spice things up a bit.

I was tempted to buy a G7 for my travels in Asia at the moment but I have a PowerShot S80 at home and my Nikon D70 with me. Think for a walkabout camera I'd rather get something more disposeable.

Looks like a good camera though, have fun with it.

Nice pictures of the tower :)

And thanks cmt for the size comparison pics :) Is the G7 as compact as I'm likely to find on the market, for the same features and performance? What are it's rivals?

At the moment, I think yes.
I looked at a few different cameras before buying the G7, but some didn't have 6x optical zoom, others didn't have IS and others weren't 10 Mega Pixels. The G7 was also the only one that I looked at that had a nice sturdy metal case.
A bit more expensive than the others, but worth it I think.

Finding it hard to find a G7 in a retail shop to have a play with. Most stocked the earlier G models but not the 5,6 or 7 :(

Someone suggested the A640 i think but again not in stock !!

Can I just ask how much you managed to pick up your G7 for? Imported or UK?

I have one, It replaced my S3-IS.

Hmmm thats interesting : I have the S3-IS and find it pretty good. Are you saying the G7 is leagues or maybe just better than the S3-IS ?

Yes the G7 has better technical specs but surely does not possess a better lens ?

Thanks for the heads up btw : Only had my cam a year and it could be upgrade time !
