hi, iv been trying to change from vista 64 bit back to xp as I prefer it but have had problems trying to boot from the disc drive.

I burned the iso image to a dvd r and put it in the disc drive, restarted the comp and set cd rom to the first boot device, went into hard disc priority and of the two things there i put 'bootable add in drives' over my hard drive.

when i press f10 and reboot, it says 'booting from disc' then a load of script flashes onto the screen for a second, including 'vista loader' and it boots vista.

iv tried taking the hard drive out and booting from the cd drive but it just says 'BOOT ERROR, INSERT MASTER DISC AND PRESS ENTER'

its not the dvd drive thats the problem as i have used 3, this one from a friend as i thought the other two might have been the problem.

my mobo is a p35 gigabyte:

im not sure whats going wrong, i installed vista 64 bit succesfully on this setup and it worked, i found the cd and put that in the drive and i can go into the setup through windows, but the same happens as with the xp disc if i try and boot it through restarting my computer.

does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong or any suggestions to help me?
thanks

You get that boot error message when the system can't find any bootable media. It either means that the bios is not setup to boot from the optical drive or the CD is knackered.

thanks, im trying a different brand of dvd now 'memorex' and il have a thorough look at the settings in the bios. unfortunately i don't have any unfilled cd's at the moment and so can't use that =\ thanks for your help

double check that you have set first boot priority to cd rom.

sounds like that is where the problem lies

under Standard CMOS features it has picked up the DVD drive under IDE Channel 2 Master and my Hard drive under IDE Channel 3 Master, just wondering why is it not under IDE Channel 0 or 1 Master, is it just the particular slot in the mobo?

In advanced CMOS Features the First Boot Device is CDROM, 2nd is Hard Drive and 3rd is Hard Drive, that all ok?

Under Hard Disc boot priority:
1. Bootable Add-in Cards
2. Hard drive (product code im guessing but i know its my hard drive)
does this matter that its just got bootable add in cards as number 1. and hasn't found my dvd drive specifically?

il give it a go as it is

thanks for that slashiem, changed that :) it wasnt responding when i pressed a key when it said press a key to boot from disc.

when i installed vista 64 bit on the comp i didnt have my current keyboard, it wasn't a usb one

EDIT: woohoo! thanks everyone for your help
