Behind you... Naked!
I am trying to get my daughters PC to connect to the frigging router.

The Router is a Netgear DG834PN

Running Vista Basic on her PC but I have spare XP Home Licences and I may actualyl upgrade to XP on that, and I am also considering ubuntu for her too, but I would like to stick with Vista Basic ( 64Bit ) if I can.

Anyway, I tried a few USB adapters and they were floating between 2 bars and 4 and every time I tried to connect, it would fail and give me a message after the diagnosis of low signal.

Anyway, I have a Netgear PCI Wireless card here.. A WG311T and so I have grabbed some drivers for that and that is now seeing all 5 bars but it is still saying that the signal is poor?

Right, stuff that, I took the router upstairs and I trie to connect to the Router that wayt, with the router sat under a foto away from the ariel in teh WIFI card... Its still doing the same thing.

I have tried doing all the ings like changing the security and even disabling it and I have restarted the router and the PC many many times but nothing is letting me connect.

Im at a total loss

Any clues?

Hhmmm..

Ok, partial success

NETGEAR PCI ADAPTER shows up with EXCELLENT / 5 BARS and wontr talk to a NETGEAR ROUTER.

So, during some "Get-somehting-running" phaze, I have put in a DLINK USB Adapter, and this is now talkign to my Linksys Router in the LAN, when only on a poor 1 bar, this is then connected to my switch, which is then down down to the netgear Modem/Router.

Its awfully slow, but its connected at least!??

Its not good enough, but its working for now.

Buy a tub of pringles, cut a hole in the side of it, put your dongle through it and point it at the router, see if that helps signal strength ;)

Sad fact is that things like this often work great.

But what I have done now, is gone back to my good old Linksys WAG354G and with the Netgear PCI Adapter, Im reading a perfect 5 bars and signal strength has so far not yet dropped below 98%

So, thats great.

Its a bit of a shame however because its quite slow... Fast enough for my daughters basic browsing needs I should hope, but the Netgear Modem/router is 108 as is the PCI card and when I used them before with the Neatgear Rangemax ( 240Mbps ) its was actually quite nippy, but this is currently only 54 and so in english, this is about 56K dialup speeds.

But its done, so for now Im ok... ish!
