cannot get a network from 360 to laptop

i been trying for ages to get a networking going from my laptop to my 360 so i can play on xbox live the laptop has xp home sp2 and i am using the cable supplied with the premium 360 but it keeps failing at the ip. i have no idea what to do iv tryed different ip's ect but no luck can anyone explain what to do as google gets me know where either because i dunno what to look for
