Got a new laptop and trying to wirelessly connect it to my existing network via my Sky router.

I give the laptop the credentials to logon and it confirms it does this, but from then on the news isn't so good.

The laptop says it is connected (with excellent strength) to an "unidentified network" and that it has no internet connection. Furthermore if I type in the IP address of the router it fails to show the logon screen.

If I use a Lan cable all is OK?

Any suggestions? Is there something maybe on the Sky router I need to do to give the laptop permission?

ps: I've even turned off the firewall for the moment! And this is Vista.

Had this with a sky router a few weeks ago.
Try getting into the sky router/login via cable and have a look at the wireless section. The one I was having trouble with had the wireless switched off :)

No, the wireless network is definately on, as the laptop sees it to connect to. Furthermore, the router seems to show the laptop as a connected device (via wireless).

It's just that the laptop does not then seem (using wireless) to get the internet, network, or even the router logon :(

Even a tracert of 192.168.0.1 completely fails (times out)!?

What about the encryption type?on the router and lappy. Are they both using TKIP or AES. MAC filtering?
After that I am at a loss mate

The odd thing is via a Lan cable its access is local + internet. But via wireless it's "local only"...

The encryption is WPA/WPA2-PSK. And again, the router shows it as an attacked device... Very confused :(

Another thought, are they all on the same network?same name exactly?
on home network not public?
actually that was about 3 thoughts` :)

yes but is it TKIP OR AES on router and lappy?

If I change the encryption on the router, I can see the encryption method (automatically selected) on the laptop changing to match it when connecting to the network. I've tried a couple of alternatives and all leave me connected as "local only".

The network ID/name is "WORKGROUP".

It's got to be something to do with this PC, as my partners work laptop connects (wirelessly) fine!

tried downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturers website? I know usually windows picks up that kind of thing, but maybe try a manual update of the drivers?

The drivers look as upto date as I can see...

Looking on google for "wireless local access only" it seems it a VERY common Vista problem

if I was you I'd ditch Vista pronto...try booting into a linux live cd and seeing if it will connect then. If so, you'll need a Vista reinstall or take the chance to upgrade to Win 7 and watch most of your troubles disappear

Did anyone manage to fix this issue as my parents have just changed to Sky from Be and the sony xp laptop connects fine to the wireless router but the Compaq vista machine does not. Same issue as above.

has connected to the Wireless network connection (SKY66FA9) signal strength excellent but access is local only and the network diagram shows...

Laptop (this computer -----> Unidentified network --x---> Internet (greyed out meaning no connection)

All latest drivers installed etc etc. The problem does not lie with the wireless itself but some network configuration that is stopping it connect to the unidentified network.

It's really frustrating ! I hate VISTA !!!!

I applied every update I could, over and over. I then noticed it had not even gone upto SP1, yet alone SP2. So I applied these manually, and voila, it then connected properly!

Well there was an optional update for the Atheros wifi in there list. downloaded via lan cable connection, 6 minutes later (lol to install a 355kb file) and the wireless is now working. Hooray !!
