Cannot get machine to overclock!

Hi all

I am running an Intel E6400 C2D with a Gigabyte GA945P-DS3 mobo.

I would like to overclock this system to get some more performance from the CPU, but am running into problems that I've never found an answer for!

When I go into the BIOS to overclock the system I can change the values, but when I restart the PC after saving changes, it always resets the values back to square 1 again (everything default). Any other changes I make are saved, it's only the clock speed settings that get reset.

Welcome to the Forums

What are you changing the FSB to?

Make you you set the Overclocking to Manual
FSB Frequency to 300MHz (to start with)
PCI-E Frequency to 100MHz or 101MHz

the voltage should be enough.

I have tried all sorts - increasing it by just 1 or 2 (to 275). PCI-E is at 100Mhz so I just leave that there.

I was wondering if there is some sort of safeguard in the BIOS that prevents you from overclocking it too much? It's on the latest stable release of the BIOS.

Change your ram divider too, you're ram needs to be running no more than 667mhz untill you can find the CPU/fsb sweet spot, then you can start upping the ram speed.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. It looks like by the BIOS screen every is set to Auto. Try setting them to manual to see if any additional options appear.

You'll need to give +1 to your FSB and MCH voltages

Just tried again with three different settings:

1.5x memory divider, FSB 433
1.5x memory divider, FSB 270
1.5x memory divider, FSB 267 (just one above the default).

I've also just tried the upping the voltages by +0.1V.

Same still happens, press F10 to save, PC reboots, go back into BIOS and they're back at "CPU Host Clock Control Disabled".

The memory settings that are at Auto - well I did have them set at 5-5-5-12 as per this thread, but it makes no difference, the PC still doesn't save the overclock settings.

Just a quick update!

I think I've found where I was going wrong.

When I'd made a change, I was rebooting and going straight back into the BIOS on the next boot to see whether it had taken or not. I resisted the urge and booted into Windows, and lo and behold over the course of the evening, several BSODs and several glasses of Baileys later, I have managed to get it up to 2.72 GHz from the original 2.13. I have stability tested it using Orthos for 30 mins at this speed and all is running fine.

I am running at 340MHz FSB and 2.00 memory multiplier now, I took it to 350 earlier this evening and it BSOD'd, then came up with "DISK BOOT FAILURE" on boot, causing a temporary increase in my heartrate, but all seems OK now.

i had this problem with a gigabyte motherboard
it would overclock fine with only 2GB ram in 2 slots
if i put 4GB in 4 slots or 4GB in 2 slots it had the same problem you discribe
tried all different setting but no luck
i checked and a lot of other people have the same problem
try googling it
i ended up giving up and changing my motherboard
had a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L now have asus P5Q deluxe
