I'm off on holibobs tomorrow and to keep the GF happy whilst away I've said I will keep my server on and she can access it via Plex.

Normally I let the server to go sleep and I can use my phone, whilst at home, to wake it up (I use Fing which works when in sleep but since it updated itself to Windows 10 it won't wake up from off anymore)

I've looked for progs etc I can put on her laptop and the few I've seen all seem to suggest they can wake it up but I can never get it to happen when trying to from a remote location and not on the home network.

It's all set up for WOL to be enabled and magic packets enabled. I have the PC local IP and it's MAC code and fairly sure I've opened the right ports etc but it still refuses to play ball.

Is there anywhere that gives simple instructions for the hard of thinking like me to get this working?

Alternatively I could stop it going to sleep but not sure how much electric it will use.

Just stop it sleeping, I take it you're only away for a week or 2? It'll make next to no difference to your bill.

I WOL remotely by SSHing into my Router and issuing a command from the CLI.

Does your router support SSH/Telnet/Other Remote management that will let you send a WOL packet? Be it via GUI or CLI.

I'm sure it does support remote management. It's a Draytek 2925.

I think I'll just stop the server going to sleep for now.

Ah OK. And which IP address do I use? The machines local IP address or a fixed IP of the router?

I don't think I've set a password so will leave SecureON blank. I know the MAC code.

It can be done remotely. I forward port 5555 or similar to the ip 192.168.1.255 to the correct port for wol. It's something like port 8 or 9.

Sending to 255 means it goes to all devices. Just use a wol client that lets you pick port number and mac address..

No need to vpn
