Cannot max out games?

I got a replacement 4870x2 and it is the same so i am guessing the card was fine that i did an RMA on.

I have to turn off a number of options to get over 60fps in a lot intensive on call of duty world at war.

things like dynamic foliage and stuff.

I mentioned FEAR in the game section.

i mentioned the test would really slow down when the barrel explodes i disabled shadows now the in game test gives much better fps the minimum being over 60?

Whats wth this card i though it was capable of maxing out games with a standard of 60fps.

You haven't got really insane AA or AiF settings locked on in CCC have you?

Without anti aliasing that card should so 60fps on almost everything (barring crysis I mean....and I'd imagine that if it supports Xfire it's not too far off 60 either).

Have you found any benchmarks online involving this card, a simillar CPU and a game you own so you can do a direct compare? Obviously your score will vary by a few %, but if it's drastically lower, then something is definitely up.

I play games on 4AA and 16AF at 1600x1200.

I am not surw which test to run it with i am not sure what i am looking for.

I ran 3D Mark 06 a few weeks back on the older card and i get 17k

Well those settings are far from excessive, I can't see them being the problem.

17k sounds about right if 3dmark doesn't do Xfire, because my GTX280 with a 3.52GHz CPU, weighs in a little higher in the mid to high 18K's......which I THINK would be about right comparing the 280 to a single 4870 core.

As for tests....well I'd just google for some bencmarks.......for instance "fear 4870x2 benchmark" or whatever. some games have built in benchmarks (lost planet for example, or the X series), others like crysis have little benchie programs you can get from places like guru3d, which run pre-recorded demos and record the results. With other games it's more of a "ballpark" thing.....one surefire test I've heard of, to determine if all is well or not, is a level in COD4MP called "overgrow" or "overgrown" or something.....a seriously leafy place.....I've read several folks use just running around it on your own empty server to get a "feel" for performance relative to other runs, or other users.
The trick is to find a test you can run, that someone else has also run on a system broadly simillar to yours (some review sites do extensive benchmarking, and if they're keen overclockers, you should find some run on a CPU in the 3.2-3.8 range....which, as the old musician's saying goes, is "close enough for jazz").
If your results are a little bit different, then your machine is fine, and we're both putting too much faith in the 4870x2, but if they're like half or a third of what others are getting, then you do indeed have a problem somewhere in the box.

A REALLY easy test (though I THINK it's only for one of your cores) is furmark, it's free and very much hammers the GPU while being gentle on the CPU....it should give some indication that the card itself is/isn't OK. the 48nn's are sort of furmark specialists.....when I tested a 4850 against my 8800GTX, they traded blows in most things, with the GTX overall being the quicker.....but in furmark, the ATI just left it for dead with at least 1.5 times the FPS.

How is a can you 280 get a higher score on 3d mark to my 4870x2? peoples seem to be 18 to 20k from the list i was presented with they use on corei7 systems though.

So you think my 17k score sounds pk? it was the free edition by the way.

My cpu is clocked to 3.6 is the max it will go on my board.

I have the gpu's clocked also.

And what do you mean xfire? using both of my cores?

You have a dual core, he has a quad.

Are you sure Xfire is on and working (so your definately using both cores, not just one, i.e your x2 is running as a single 4870), GPU-Z can tell you if its enabled, but tbh, there is no card out that can get 60fps minimum in every game with all settings maxed, you are going to have turn some down, drop AA/AF etc...

Definitely give your card a workout with the good suggestions above. See what happens then report back. I feel for you dude, my X2 has been a good'n. Well, apart from I often have to restart the PC a few seconds after turning it on because I get a black screen the first time. Was why I didn't sell it in the end. Other than that minor glitch it pwns.

I just looked through google and it seems that somebody else has the same issues as me with FEAR in game test at the end when the barrel explodes and the fps plummit to 30 to 40.

I just look at a similar test on 3dmark 06 and a guy got 18k i did mine without oc at the time so i would imaging that i would get about 18k now.

Only thing i can put it down to is the fact that the drivers are just still not up to the standard they should be.

The results of furmark are.

Score 2060

fps min 12

States that it tested 2 gpu's

not sure what processor part meant 2999mhz
max fps 52

Average 35

Just completed a run of furmark myself and using my 4870 512 (slightly o/c) and a Q6600 @ 3.5 I got :

score (didn't quite get this but) 362440 ms
min 23
average 28
max 43

Your cpu model is listed with stock and then current speed below it.

Your score is better than my x2 this is depressing :(

My min is terrible compare to a lot of other peoples.

Not sure if its a x2 problem.

How do you feel about the rma process, do you have confidence in the way it was handled? I've just been checking your sig out and I can't think of anything that doesn't fit. It probably is but is your psu up to supporting your rig? I'd say it is but you wouldn't want to go much lower. I expect someone has already mentioned this but can you put in a mate's video card in and see how that performs? Was going to download a demo of fear since you mentioned the exploding barrels etc but unfortunately the demo didn't have the video test, or I couldn't find it.
Anyway, best of luck dude.

I have got a similar setup to you and i get on average 80fps in Cod world at war at 1900x1200 with 4AA and 16AF. So something aint right.

Have you got another pc to test the card in or maybe a friends? If not and you find out the card is fine then the next best thing to try that normally helps is a fresh install of windows.... Yeah it sucks but most of the time it works a treat, do mine every 3-4 months.

running my rig on 620w psu.

Dont have COD to benchmark for you the OP though...
