Canon 35mm f/1.4L II breaks cover

Doubt the reviews will be too far away. It'll be amazing no doubt.

How are you getting on with your Sigma 50? Really wish I knew what Canon were doing with theirs as I use my 50 f/1.4 quite a lot but it's far from perfect and very fragile. Pondered getting the Sigma a few times but not sure how long before Canon replace theirs.

It's really really good, CA is well controlled, sharp, focus is good, build quality is good. If had a Canon L logo on it, it'll be double the cost.

It is worth it over the Canon 50/1.4

And the AF? Remember reading some initial reviews which said the AF was slightly unpredictable, but then I've read the same about the 35 and not had any real issues with it.

I've just boxed up my only f1.4 lens (Canon 50mm) and it's on it's way to a new owner this afternoon which will leave my 85m 1.8 and 35mm f2.0 IS as my only 'quick' glass! If I miss the 50mm I'll pick up the new 1.8 STM as the reviews seem very good it's crazy cheap and outperforms the 1.4 USM at comparable apertures.

The only thing that stopped me getting a Sigma 35mm f1.4 was the size I've literally not taken the 35mm f2 IS off my camera since I got it for me it's the perfect size on my 5d mkii and the images it produces are fantastic!

Alex.so your a fan of the 35mm F2is? any negatives?

They need to shoot something really shiny with chrome, I want to see the CA or lack of...

That is my 1 criticism of the 35L.

Some real world examples are up. CA looks significantly better from this one:

Massive improvement on the CA's if that sample is to be believed, I predict an upgrade for Ray in the very near future!

The 50mm market is really odd from a canon perspective the 1.4 is seriously dated and from reviews is beaten by the new 1.8 USM at comparable apertures which kind of kills the 1.4as wide open it is so lacking in contrast I chose not to use it! They have been rumoured to be producing a replacement for nearly as long as we waited for the 100-400mm mkii! I was at least expecting an IS version to tie in with the other new primes they released recently.

Really haven't got a bad thing to say about it, I'd like it if it was even smaller and lighter but it does feel nice on the 5d mkii and is great to carry around all day without breaking the back (I did consider a 40mm pancake but wanted the extra stop, USM and IS). Everyone will tell you you don't need IS on a 35mm and to some extent they are right but it is very nice to have and means that you can take static shots in crazy low light. I would love the f1.4 versions but I only really use primes when I want a light weight kit and the sigma is an absolute beast in comparison!

The only negative I can think of right now is that Tamron have just unveiled a 35mm f1.8 with VC that is under $600 but I will wait for reviews to see if I need to be really disappointed!

Strange set of comparisons! I was surprised to see such a difference at f8 where I expected the lenses to be almost identical, will certainly be interesting to see some of the better review sites verdicts and then feedback from real world users.
