Im getting a canon 400d soon and wondering about batteries, for my old camera I had several sets of AA batteries which all seemed to last different lengths of time. Would having two of batteries for the 400d be sufficient for an average afternoon/morning photoing? I know its kind of a hard question to answer because it depends on a lot of things, but how many spares do people carry with them?

Also I'm thinking of getting the battery grip for it, what are peoples opinions and advantages /disadvantages with the grips?

If the battery life is anything like the 350D you should be able to get 700-800 shots per charge, perhaps a little less due to powering the main LCD for status info.

Personally I wouldn't have a camera without a grip, the whole thing feels more secure and you get the two advantages of the portrait orentation controls and the optional (read essential) hand strap.

I've only ever needed 2 batteries for a full days shooting of over 700 images. The grip is well worth buying as it saves hassle in changing batteries and also makes the camera feel more stable. Of course it does make it bigger.

Bigger isn't for everyone though - it's the very reason why some people buy the 300 // 350 // 400 D.
You'll probably find that you're fine for a whole days shooting on one battery - so I'd not buy anything for now and see how it goes. This is assuming you're not shooting something particularly intensive such as sports, or an event.

Thanks, the one thing about the camera from testing it, it does feel a little plasticy but its the best I can get for my money so If a grip improves the hold and feel of it, it sounds good

Think it's supposed to be abotu 500 shots a battery now.

Havilng played with he 350D with grip and 400D without, the grip makes a big difference and I concur that the handstrap is a big help, esp with big lenses.
