Canon 400d Vs Nikon D80

Get a 30D :p

the 30D is about the same size as D80. the Nikon D70/s is bigger then 30D and 5D.

like SDK said, you are buying into the lens system.

If I was in the market for new camera, I would buy D70/s and Nikkor 17-55 f2.8

Even cheaper than that in quite a few places, although not considerably: there are vast swathes of 'em on the bay at £330, stocked in the UK.
My price was taken from a known good photo dealer with Nikon UK stock - tbh I would rather pay the extra £20 for the peace of mind.

To be honest i think i will give the kit lenses a miss as they seem to be pretty bad....

The kit lens with Canon = bad, the kit lens with Nikon = pretty good. The 18-70 lens is nice, only thing it isn't great for is low light.

I had the choice of waiting for the D80 or buying a D70 and getting more lenses. I took the latter route.

I disagree, the kit lens on my 350D is great :) - Has served me well.

Looking forward to getting my 17-40L though :D

The kit lens on the 350d is perfectly fine for someone starting out. There is no need to rush off and waste money on L glass. They dont make you a better photographer, remember that.

Indeed.

I've had the camera since august, and I'm getting good results from the kit lens, and for my holiday in April I really fancy some L glass because the place just looks amazing.

Need to buy that plus many many memory cards :p

I concur.

The Canon kit lens is excellent for starting out with. It can be impressively sharp, and is pretty versatile. The only real downside of it is that its too slow really - f3.5-5.6.

I had good results with mine, but shifted it because I managed to pick up a Tamron 20-40mm f2.7-3.5 for £70 (yes, it really is f2.7). While the Tamron is generally quite a bit sharper, it has weird ass distortion at the wide end, which the kit lens did not. I can happily recommend the 18-55 on the basis of its value, which is quite incredible really.

I've also owned a Nikon D100 (20D at the mo), with which I used the 18-70mm. It's an extremely versatile lens, and is definitely better than the Canon kit lens, and by a fair amount. Focusing is quiet and fast, and distortion is pretty low too. Not sure on the Nikkor 18-55 though, I haven't tried one of those.
