Canon 650D announced

Tbh, I don't see much of an upgrade from 550D.. how long has Canon been using that sensor now?
Also these rebel bodies seem to depreciate pretty darn quick...

Ultimately it's because the XXXD level cameras are likely Canon's best selling DSLR range, thus they have to make them look new all the time to first time buyers and prevent them going to a rival.

Sony sensors says otherwise mate.

The sony sensors are pretty good mate.

Also, the 5d3 is basically a 7d+5d2 rolled into one

Sony 1.5x crop sensor isn't as good at ISO as 5Dii from what I can tell.
Tbh though, Canon need to make some actual tech advancements in their sensors, seriously how many times is this same dinosaur 18mp sensor going to be used?

Indeed,
DXO shows the 5D-II has an advantage in noise over the best performing 16MP Sony sensored APS-C (D7000)

The only way to get better noise performance is either going to be pixel binning or similar and reduce resolution, or just going FF, you just can't obviously beat the larger sensor area in the end..

Saying that, High ISO performance has come on leaps and bounds over the years, so even an APS-C is pretty decent, but you always want more..

Looks like a reasonable tweak to me and is basically keeping up with the other makes. Nothing spectacular (they can't as they would encroach on their higher end) but enough to keep the rebal line selling. These upgrades are never aimed at the previous gen buyers so 550D/600D owners are not their market.

BUT, the release price of £700 body only needs to be reduced given this is still a consumer and not a pro-sumer model. It is also, as we speak, going to be more expensive on release than a 60D body is now, and for photographers (ie ignore the video options) it remains to be seen if there's any real world difference?

If or more likely when the price drops, as long as the more reliable reviews hold out, I would say it could well be my next camera

As far as the 7dMK2 goes I would prefer Canon to drop the 7D and make the 70D a replacement for both the 60d/7D. Give the range its micro adjustment back and give us a clear line between DSLR ranges.

Backside illumination like Sony did for the iphone's should enable a apsc to beat yesterdays full frame. I'm not sure if any large sensors are using it yet?
However I remember Canon listed a patent not that long ago for a FF backside illuminated sensor.

The best thing on this new camera is decent AF in video mode. Which should then make it on to the next canon bodies.

For the first time in a Canon EOS DSLR, the EOS Rebel T4i includes Canon’s new Movie Servo AF for recording video. When used with Canon’s new EF and EF-S STM lenses, the camera can provide smooth and quiet continuous AF while recording video. This technological breakthrough enables the new EOS Rebel T4i to achieve AF while still retaining a DSLR camera’s signature background blur and image quality, producing stunning videos of parties, events, summer vacations or graduations.

When shooting video with Canon’s STM lenses, AF also remains silent, helping ensure you only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS Rebel T4i features a built-in stereo microphone, a first for the Rebel line, that includes an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations

That is GREAT news! So many people bought the 550D/rebelT2i for its awesome video capabilities - which were only dampened by lack of AF. Fast AF in video is the one breakthrough that Rebel line truly needed.

The dpreview link mentions "Integrated Speedlite Transmitter" - I assume this the same tech as 60D and 7D? That's certainly a nice addition to the xxxD range.

The 600D already has this feature.

I could be tempted if the price lowers enough. I was thinking of upgrading to the 600D purely for the higher ISO and movie mode (plus articulate screen) at a fairly reasonable cost for an import (can't afford the 60D).
The auto AF in the movie mode is a great feature but not sure how much I'd use it. How good is it actually?

If the 650D is this good then the 7DII is going to be quite something.

Although, I am finding it quite hard to understand how the APS-C works now.

650D - 60D - 7D.

Will the 70D be the next 7DII? The difference between the models is getting smaller...

Surprised canon a using the same sensor.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Sensor-Ratings

If you select canon and APS-C sensors then you can see that there is a very flat line in improvement, very marginal. There has barely been 1 stop increase in dynamic range and about the same in low light ISO.

Compare that to Nikon (with the new Sony sensors), a nearly 4 stop increase in dynamic range (so in the same time frame Nikon has improved Dynamic range 8x greater than Canon), and low light ISO has increased some 1 and 2/3rds of a stop.

Of course Canon may have tweaked their old sensor but we have seen no sign of this in the past years and it is clear that their old sensor design was deficient. Anyway, the 650D looks like another nice iteration. Price is as expected, this isn't the entry level model but the next one up kind of thing, and Canon knows there ae lots of 600d and even 550d and even older 500D still to be purchased new at low prices.

I don't think we will see another 7d in crop format. The 70d will become the top crop. You would think they would be keen to keep it going because I read the 7d was one of their best selling bodies but the 70d will be too close to it anyway.

I don't want a plastic body replacement when the time comes for me to change. The 70d would have to be atleast on a par with the 7d body.

The 40mm pancake lens is interesting. Wouldn't mind betting that it will form the basis of a set of compact lenses for the rumoured mirrorless camera that they might be creating.

7d is the real 60d imo

Would be good if they made a 30mm pancake with f/1.8 or something. That would be great on a crop, ff and mirrorless (if/when out).
