My wife has been an amateur photographer for a while now and has started to do the odd paid for pho shoot. Her main camera is a canon 7d with a Canon 1000d as a back up. She has just won a photo competition, the prize being a Nikon d7000 with an 18-105 VR lens , now to the question, should she keep this camera, as her new back up camera, or sell it and stick with Canon - with a view to eventually being able to afford a full frame 5d?

The lenses she has for a her canon cameras are:

85mm f1.8
Nifty 50
70-300 Tamron
18-55 kit lens

I would sell the Nikon D7000 kit and Canon 18-55mm, and get the Canon 24-105mm lens. If any money remain, get a decent flash.

Tbh I'm not really the best person to answer as I'd take it that the god's were smiling down on me, and were guiding me to Nikon...

What does she shoot?
Does she actually need a backup if she has insurance or 2 years warranty?
If she does need a backup, sell the D7000 or switch systems, no point using two system as it is confusing.

Depending on what she shoots, my advice would be to sell everything and pick up a cheap used D700 in good nick.

You really only need a back up on weddings, While missing moments can get you sued, Studio work if a Camera goes down you can just reschedule.

It's really up to her as to whether she prefers Nikon or Canon. She's got the perfect opportunity to try reasonable offerings from both with the D7000 and 7D. Whichever she prefers then I'd sell everything and get either a second hand 5Dmk2 or a D700. If she goes Canon then I'd probably keep the 85mm 1.8 though. Selling all of that and getting one of the aforementioned should still give enough change towards some glass.

It would make sense to stick to one brand to cut down on lenses and cost.

I'd go with the suggestion above and sell the Nikon get and the 1000D, buy some nice lenses and a 5d2.
