According to Canon Rumours, Canon have officially discontinued the following items

Canon Speedlite 580EX II
Canon EF 24 f/2.8
Canon EF 28 f/2.8
Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L

From what I gather the EF 24-70 f/2.8L is already difficult to source. As for the others, the biggest loss will be the Speedlite 580EX II.

Whilst the newer 24 and 28mm will probably be an improvement over their older and optically inferior predecessor, its a shame that Canon have seen fit to hike the prices of the 600EX and 24-70 MKII

Many places are indeed no longer stocking the 24-70 f2.8L as the MKII is due in the next couple of months. Having spent a few weeks trying to find one I gave up as I didn't want to pay the near £1,100 pounds the places with stock wanted. I ended up paying £750 for a used 2011 model.

I have no ideas about the others.

I'm ready buy but not quite ready to afford a 24-70 and another flash, which makes this a royal pain in the ass.

All of the sudden you need another £1200 to get basically the same thing.

I am not sure they are £1200 better for the 2. I am not sure the 24-70 is twice as good...

HOLY

the price of the flash is crazy

probablly worth buying a second hand 580 second hand whilst they are still around

what are canon doing getting so expensive compared to nikon...

really feel that we are paying a premium for no reason

I think Canon need to look at their pricing, the premiums for the new equipment are ridiculous.

Unless they've inflated the price of the 600EX and the 24-70 Mk II to 'pursuade' people to purchase the 580EX and 24-70 MK I and will drop the 60EX and 24-70 MK II to be a little more in line with their older versions?

Old: 5D II (£2300) + 24-70mm (£1300) + 580EX (£500) = £4100

New: 5D III (£3000) + 24-70mm (£2300) + 600EX (£680) = £5980

Hmm. 50% increase in RRP from one generation to the next.

PocketWizard have started reverse engineering the new Canon RF protocol - hopefully the far east manufacturers are doing the same to bring it more into the price point of us mortals.

With no "slave" RT flash, and no way to use the old optical and the radio triggering at the same time, it means one big ass cost to replace a set of flashes with the new RT ones.
