I'm looking at replacing my Sony compact, the P200 with something a little more versatile. I've been looking around on the web as you do and I quite like the look of the G7. I used to have the Powershot G5 which was a cracking piece of kit, and wondered if the G7 would be a good move?

The new Canon G7 looks to be a good camera, the main concerns that current 'G fanboys' have is over the missing flip out/rotate LCD screen and no RAW capability.
From my point of view I wouldn’t use RAW in a point and shoot camera anyway and the inclusion of IS makes up for the missing flip out LCD. I will probably get one next year to replace my ageing Canon S30.

Thanks for the reply mate - I wouldnt be interested in using RAW either for the reasons you state. Jpeg is perfectly acceptable. The G5 is actually better quality than my Sony P200 so I have a good feeling about the G7.

Hmm are they even out yet?

Edit, doesnt look like it :( I would have liked one for Mexico in a couple of weeks but nevermind.

You should wait for the reviews. I remember the G5 was a G3, but with 5 megapixel sensor instead of 4 megapixel. This, combined with the same lens as the G3 led to a lot of chromatic aberrations, even at narrower apertures.

I had a G3 and it was excellent. I shall consider getting this new G7 too.
