My brother bought one a couple of years ago, it came with the "standard" lens.

I'm thinking of buying him a lens for Xmas, but I have no idea what the lens was that was supplied with his camera. I don't know the actual model number of the Rebel either.

Not wanting to embarrass myself and buy him a lens that is useless, can anybody fill in the blanks?

The mount isn't a problem, as there's only one type it can be.
It would be extremely useful to know whether his camera is film or digital, though.
Do you think he'd like a better quality lens with the same "zoom", or a second lens with lets him zoom in further?

The problem I have is that I don't know what the lens he has is exactly, it is digital though. He bought the Rebel 'kit'.

I know it is a zoom and I think it is a similar type to the Nikon D70 kit that I bought, in that it is in the range of 18-70mm (approx). If it is, I would look at the 70-200mm (approx) range for him.

As it is for a Xmas present, I don't really want to ask him!

The Rebel is the US name for the 300D, and he probably got the 18-55 lens, which isnt the best lens in the world.

What kind of budget have you got?

£500 or thereabouts. He has children and I'm thinking about a zoom lens that would be good for portraits amongst other things. The versatility of a zoom would be useful, I don't really want to consider prime lenses. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM looks interesting. He doesn't need F2.8 etc, that would be wasted money as he wouldn't use it enough! I think the "IS" version would be a little too rich for me and I'm not at all convinced it is value for money.

Seconded on the 70-200 F4. Awesome lens. Fast, sharp, I really do seem to use mine a LOT now. Over the weekend it was for portrait shots and in conjunction with a Kenko 1.4 teleconvertor for capturing some birds of prey.

The Digital Rebel is the US name for the 300D. The Rebel name has been used on several different film cameras with Different Suffixes.

If you've got that much money to spend on him, and you want a zoom...buy the 70-200 f/4 L. I love this lens long time.

Here's a couple of samples (note that they're cut down JPGs, but NOT 56k friendly. Both shots were taken using an F4 70-200 at 200mm, and with a Kenko 1.4x teleconvertor attached:
Note that both were moving, hence the increased difficulty in getting a perfect focus.

The 70-200 F/4L is indeed a CRACKING lens. I love mine to bits!
