Canon vs Nikon

Is there no other offering from Canon that can do the job just as well and not white?

Canon 200mm f2.8 - Black
Sigma 300mm f2.8, 500mm f4.5 and 800 f5.6 - Also black
Sigma 200-500 f2.8 - Green

That's about it really, it's fair to assume most people using Canon bodies will have L lenses for it rather than Sigma when shooting the Olympics.

Hmm, fair point.
I do however think there is bound to be some section of the Canon pro-users using third party lenses...

Throughout this years airshows in the UK, I've felt distinctly in the minority wielding a Nikon, sometimes massively so (like 10:1). However in France at the 24h Le Mans Classic, it seemed the other way around, with Nikon clearly being the favourite, which I found quite surprising.

Those photo's look fairly even, with a slight favouritism towards Canon. Good pics of the pros, thanks for posting them Tomsk.

Not ALL Canon users buys an L lens or white/grey lens.

And some of the grey lenses are Nikon.

I think someone counted them at Dpreview and it was at least 2:1 Nikon:Canon.

This ratio was confirmed by several pro photogs at the olympics who said that in indoor events the D3 was dominant.

I wondered when a thread like this was going to appear on here, it has done everywhere else! :p

For me I think its a good thing that Nikon have gone and produced several very good bodies. Canon must respond - which can only be great news for us lot!

Several of my friends own D3s, and the moment you start shooting and look at the files its obvious that its a cracking body, doesn't suprise me one bit that people have rushed out and bought them, if I was starting out, at this point in time i'd go down the Nikon route.

My friend has just bought a brand new D700 and 400mm F2.8 AFS VR, I have to say it was a very very nice combo to shoot with. I'd go out and buy a D3/D700 tomorrow if I won the lottery!

Yes,, it is only a matter of time for Canon to 1-up over Nikon, then it will be Nikon's turn to play catch up- which they will succeed at and become champs again.

What to draw from this is buy good glass in either Canon or Nikon and you will alsways get great photos

I must admit that I keep thinking about changing brand to Nikon/Canon but, as you'll all know, once you've invested in one brand/mount it's a huge cost to change over.

I had got my mind set on a Canon 1d MkIII, but after trying a Nikon D3, D200 and a D700 last weekend, I would go Nikon now I think.

But, there is realistically nothing I can't do with my Pentax kit really, so changing at this point would be pure vanity! I do like the huge selection of lenses available in the Nikon/Canon range though.

Getting back to the topic, I can think of nothing worse photographically than sitting in a 'pit' of photographers trying to photograph athletics! One, I don't like being a sheep, and secondly I don't particularly like athletics! Some nice kit on show though!

Well I'd imagine most of them are shooting are shooting for publications, so it's their job.

Saw an interesting bit of footage from the Olympics during Eurosports "funny clips".
Photographer with a D3 body but no nikon markings on it, no Nikon on the prism housing and no D3 badge where you would see one.
The only give away was the "red swoosh" below the shutter release.
Was it a D3x being field tested?
