I've got a sata hard drive which I need to get the data off.

I've bought one of those hot swappable hard drive caddys where you just slide the drive in.

I've attached the dock to my laptop but it does not seem to be ableto see it in My Computer. I've gone into the disk management utility and it sees the drive ok and shows it as being healthy yet it wont let me browse the files or do anything with it. I only get the option to “Delete Drive” and “Help”

I’ve also tried internally mounting the drive in another pc but that seems to give the same result.

Is there anything else i need to do as this was once the main drive in another system (although it was running an OS called Vortecbox which is Linus based)

How is the drive formatted? If it's laid out with Linux filesystems then you might struggle to get Windows to read it. A Linux live CD might allow you to access both drives simultaneously though.

i assume its a windows formatted drive

as suggested try a Linux live CD, if that fails attach it to the internal sata connector and run a chkdsk on it... it will probably not work via usb...

once attached to the sata it will probably run a chkdsk on the next power on without you doing anything..

Ah that could possibly be the issue as it was formatted through the Vortexbox software.

Forgive my ignorance, what is a Linux Live cd? Whilst the Vortexbox was Linux based it had quite a user friendly web GUI so i've not got any Linux experience
