have a Huawei p20 and recently I've not been able to connect to any public WiFi.

When I try to log into free WiFi I get my phone trying to go to an address called: connectivity check. Hicloud.

This page never loads and I can't access any WiFi network

Why is this happening and how can I fix this?

It happens with every browser I use, chrome or Firefox.

So does that mean I'm screwed and the only way around it is to get a phone that's not Huawei?
Pretty much. Either Huawei stops using their unique tracking link to check for captive portals, or the public Wi-Fi service unblocks Huawei's link but that seems unlikely due to current security scare issues with the brand.

I have a Honor Play and I noticed my phone trying to go to that link as well. I just close it however and then I get a notification that asks me to 'authenticate' the wifi. I can get onto Virgin Media Wifi on the underground however and also the public 02 WiFI in the gym. I have recently had an update (2 days or so ago) I am not sure if anything has been pushed out?
