Can't access SQL after switching server role to domain controller

We use both. Yes, I think VMware is a superior product to Hyper-V.
Don't get me wrong, it's a million miles better than Virtual PC and I'm sure the next gen virtualisation from Microsoft will close the gap completely but for now it's not quite there.

I don't think you've seen Hyper-V/System Center demonstrated properly. VMware is great but just like Hyper-V/System Center it requires knowledge to configure it properly.

I used VMware for a few years at my last job.
This one we have VMware and apparently the management are pushing Hyper-V.
All our static servers are upgrading to 2008R2 this month and next. Seems logical to use a bit of both.

A mix of both is indeed the best :) At least you can pit them against each other properly. Both solutions integrate quite nicely if you want a 'manager of managers'.

I'd guess management will be pushing it due to cost in the current environment. There are a couple of features and benefits of VMware that Hyper-V doesn't yet provide (however the majority of these will be adressed in the next release, and IMO Hyper-V 3.0 will put MS ahead of VMware) but these need weighing up against what the business actually requires, not what it's IT bods think it requires. I've been in numerous situations where the 'blocker' behind migrating to an MS solution is not whether the technology is fit for purpose, but the IT staff. (Been there and done that myself! ;))
