Can't be upgraded?

What were you thinking of upgrading?

Most PCs can be upgraded in some form or other, but i think yopu may mean the graphics which can be difficult as a lot of Dell PCs are missing an AGP or PCI-E slot

My sister will probably be getting a Dimension 3100 (she didn't much like the idea of me building her a pc. can't think why) which will be more than enough for her, since she doesn't really game. And it just reminded me of reading somewhere that they couldn't be upgraded.

How can they be missing a PCI-E/AGP slot? I thought they came on all motherboards?

I'm sure some cheapo Dell boards come with integrated graphics and a few PCI slots and thats all you get, this probably isn't the case anymore though.

Because they make their own boards. Some have it some dont - depends on model purchased.

She's trying to get it for £350-£450. But she really, really isn't keen on me building it (which I can understand. Last time I opened up a pc I killed it). But please, spec away. I'll try and talk her round.

Sure its got the slowest AM2 A64 but its upgradable, and the gfx are intergrated but again upgradable. If a monitor isnt required we can up the CPU and get a better gfx card

Hate to drop on the end of someone else's thread, but...

...ahem...Dell were doing a starter system until recently that was discounted from about £329 to £299 including a 17" CRT monitor.

I was thinking about buying one for my step-daughter for Christmas, but it seems it's been discontinued, which is a bit of a bugger - although, to be fair it's perhaps just as well since there's some question over upgradeability.

I could build her one, but I'm not sure I could do it with a monitor for £300 - oh hang on, I think I just found it, but please look at my other post below.

She's only really gonna use it for MSN, school work, internet surfing and probably some low grade gaming - I was hoping I could drag her into some home network multiplayer stuff - but all the same, it would be nice to have the upgrade options usually available.

Can you do anything for that sort of budget?

Again, apologies for the hijack.
