Just went into a well known electronics store Don't mention competitors again, Big Kev to have a little gander at the TV's. Was just looking around when I was approached by one of there staff. He turned out to be the head of TV sales or something.

Anyway, after about a minute of talking I realized he was spouting total BS. I tried to correct him but before I knew it we were in a full blown argument!

He was getting really aggressive towards me and kept saying “wanna bet” at everything I said. I couldn't believe the way he was talking to me. I was truly shocked. I had never been spoken to like this by any member of staff in any shop. Never the less I continued to argue with him but he just wouldn't have any of it.

First off I said I was looking to get the new Sony RPTV (Sony KDS55A2000 - £1600) at which point he interrupted and said "Don’t bother. RPTV's are a thing of the past." I said not for people on a budget and are after a big screen 1080P set. "No point in getting a 1080p set. No one will ever broadcast in 1080p. For £1600 you can get a plasma. The picture will be much better." You can imagine my reaction.

During the course of our argument he made many other ludicrous claims:

- Specs are the most important thing when he sells TV’s. Specs mean everything.

- Samsungs are the best LCD's. Period. He even compared the new Samsung to the old Sony model to prove his point. I pointed this out and he was adamant that it was the latest Sony. He later went back on that and said Sony have a W series out but you cannot buy the X series yet. I said compare this Samsung to the Sony X series and you'll see where I'm coming from.

- "There is no such thing as a 1080p plasma." Pioneer PDP-5000EX you fool!

- The LG plasma he had on the wall was better than the Pioneer PDP-507XD he had elsewhere in the shop. He was also adamant that it was the best plasma out and 'top of the range'. I pointed out that the Panasonic PHD9 and the Fujitsu P50XHA58EB are both superior sets but he was again having none of it.

- "1080p is useless. 720p is what your after."

After all this I said I would come in tomorrow and prove him wrong. His reply "I dont want you coming into my store. I dont want to argue with someone who hasnt got a clue about TV's." He then stormed off.

I know this all sound ridiculous but this is 100% what happened. I just couldn't believe just how wrong and deluded he was.

I could "and probably will" add more of his comments to this post but atm I cant be bothered.

Thanks for reading.

omg! name and shame the store location please! (so we don't have to go in!)

id write a letter to head office mate, you might as well, start an enquiry about the guys attitude.

they obviously know jack about TVs

"1080p is useless" ha-ha, its only the future of HD as we know it!

Exactly as ^^ said.

Id write to head office mate and get this guy disciplined, seriously. Hope it wasnt one of the Birmingham stores but then I dont work for them anymore :p

EDIT - Just noticed youre from Gloucester :)

Id have hit him. No keyboard warrior style. true style for his attitude towards customers.

Wasn't far off mate. He deserved a punch clean in the mouth tbh.

Yeah his attitude actually suprised me more than his lack of knowledge. How he gets away with it is astonishing. It was like he was wanting me to challenge him, looking for an argument. He kept saying "Your going down the wrong line. "He even said "Watch it. I'll drag another 3 people into this arguement." I didn't say anything at the time but I should have said go on then you ****! I'll argue with them all day longs aswell. You clueless bunch of *******!

I could tell he was getting angry because I noticed he had a little twitch under his eye and it was going like mad! :D Perhaps he didn't like a 16yr old telling him his job. But its true. I know more than he does. I could do his bloody job with my eyes closed and my hands tied behind my back.

I'm going in there after work tomorrow armed with some printouts to shut the ****** up. Can't wait to see his face.

Write a letter to someone high up at head office and customer servics? I'd go for the former if you can get contact details.

Complain about the level of 'advice' offered by the member of staff, and the aggressive and condescending manner with which it was delivered....go into the technical details so the person reading it will (hopefully) pass it onto someone with decent knowledge higher up the chain who has the power to make things happen. Suggest that whilst you were originally quite happy to make your £xxxx purchases with this retail chain, you have now been put off on this occasion by the lack of knowledge of the salesperson and the manner with which he dealt with your enquiries. Don't rant or rave, be polite and pleasant but detail your complaints comprehensively, and make your disappointment in the service offered clear.

With any luck someone will be in touch with you with a 'gesture of goodwill' so as to secure your business and make amends for your previous experience. Could make for a cheaper telly ;) and for the time/cost of sending a letter its gotta be worth it.

Thats a very good idea. I'd rather ring them up though as I'm not exactly brilliant at writing letters. I'm going to have a little look to try and find some contact details now.

As for shopping there, I wouldn't buy a TV from them in a million years. Even if they were going for half price.

Just might do that. Although my phone may not record it very well. Worth a shot though. :D

Run into the shop with a hand full of printouts in one hand. and a fist in the other shouting "**** YOU!!!"

Haha sounds like a plonker tbh.

One thing that came to mind though - when he was referring to top of the range/new tech, he was probably referring to models that the store stocked. Chances are they wont have all the models - especially newer ones.

Not making excuses for his behaviour like, just whats the point in him telling you that there's plenty better, just we don't sell it? Think along similar lines to OcUK's own "no competitors" rule.

On a different note, I've always had a theory (based largely on experience) that younger people, however clued up you are on a subject or product will always be treated differently (as in looked down on to some extent) when you go to buy something - particular something relatively expensive.

They did have a newer, better TV in the store though. The pioneer. Was right next to the LG.

The pioneer was the best TV they had in the store. He didn't seem to think so. Probably because it wasn't being fed a super dooper HD feed like the LG's.

Not defending the guy as it sounds like he needs a few lessons in customer service and manners. But if you didn't need a sales assistants help, why didn't you just politely say you're just browsing, rather than waste time getting into a pointless argument.

Also he does make a point when considering the retailers target market:

"1080p is useless. 720p is what your after."

Fact is that a high street retailer is aiming at joe public, who probably watch dvds on a 40quid dvd player bought from tesco and are perfectly happy doing so.

For joe public a 1080p screen is pointless and expensive as the only 1080p material 'available' is blu-ray or hd-dvd, which require a big investment and are nowhere near readily available. You can't go into tesco and pick up superman on blu-ray, which is where a lot of people buy their films these days. Sky HD isn't exactly cheap either, and 1080p broadcasts I can't see happening for years, the US isn't even broadcasting 1080p yet.

I did tell I was just browsing but he said to me "Tell me what TV your after and I bet I can get it." So I thought I'd ask him about the RPTV I was after, at which point he started spouting bull.

He wasn't talking to 'joe public' when he made the "1080p is useless" comment, so he should have known better. Mind you, I dont exactly look the type who'd know a fair bit about TV's.

you gonna royally pwn him tomorrow?

I don't think i've ever come across a high street sales person that knows what they're talking about. Even the guys in the official Sony shop don't seem to know much. :(

Best to do all your research online, then use local shops purely to have a look at some of the TVs in the flesh.
