Cant boot from external usb cd drive

Just put my new rig together and trying to install windows 8.1 oem from an external usb 2 cd drive

Cant get my msi gaming z97 to boot from it i do have it connected to a usb 2.0 port on motherboard

Any ideas?

Should i have usb set to uefi or legacy and uefi

I had this problem a few years ago, tried everything. I ended up using the windows 7 USB/DVD tool to make a bootable USB drive and that worked perfect

Just used above method and it worked with my windows 8.1 oem license

P.S make sure you use a USB 2 port. I couldn't get my gigabyte Z97 to boot from the USB 3 port. You can use a USB 3 memory stick though
