hoping someone here can help, built a new pc on monday and used a old hdd to install the os on (this is a 5400rpm drive) this will run fine until i try to put another hhd in (7200rpm), it stalls on boot and goes to blue screen, i've tried putting it on the ide channel with my cd writer on and still the same, tried all configerations of jumpers and now i'm out of ideas.

if i just put the newer drive in can i partition it (there is plenty of free space) to install the os or will i loose everything i have on it?

Master/slave settings correct?

Has the 'new' drive got windows on it from another PC? It may be booting from the 'wrong' disc.

If you do a new load of windows on the 'new' disc you can't resize the partition and create a new one, so if the current partition uses all the disc all you can do is delete the windows install on the drive and do a new one. All the data should be OK.
