Cant connect to internet

I recently started gettin an error everytime i tried to shut my computer dow.Something along the lines of run32.dll .Cant remember now.So i went to windows updates to downoad the latest files (win defender etc)I restarted to install the updates and now it wont conect to the internet

Ive run avg 8.5 and it found a few nasties but got rid of them.I used ad aware as well.
My laptop connects fine to my router.Does any1 have any suggetsions.how easy is it to find my system restore point or wipe my comp clean.My copy of xp is in a hidden partition.My comp is slow at the moment so a wipe might be for the best.

Yeah it has a static ip address.I need it for a game it wouldnt conect without it.It has been static for over a year tho..When i run ipconfig it only stayed open for 20 secs then went off.I tried again and it went off after a split second

.How do i ping the gateway???

damn this is annoying.I hate using my laptop.How do i check my dns server settings???
Ok managed to check that and i have none
Preferred dns server and alternate dns server are blank???
