Can't extract Microsoft Security Essentials

I'm spring cleaning a windows laptop for a family member, and I want to install Microsoft Security Essentials for anti-virus.

I downloaded the installer from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/security-essentials-download (Windows Vista 64bit) using Chrome, but when I tried to extract it, it failed with the message:

Extraction Failed: File is corrupt.

At first I thought the download had messed up, so I tried again, same deal. Then I tried in IE, then Safari, still the same error.

Then I tried on a different computer, same error. Different internet connection - same error.

At this point, although it seems highly unlikely, I can't think of any other explanation other than the file is corrupted on MS servers. Please could someone download it and see if they can extract the file just for my sanity? Cheers.

*edit*
PS - I can download and extract the 32-bit version with no issues, but it's the wrong version for this laptop.

Appears to be running a hotfix before installing MSE. Have you tried downloading and installing the hotfix separately? Just google the kb number and it should be the top result.

Thanks for the link but it's the same error - is it just me, can you guys extract it? Or is it knackered for you as well?

If I try and extract it with 7-zip, there are multiple broken files, not just the hotfix, so I think the whole archive is shafted.

My issue with Avast (and most of the other free AV apps) is it's nagware and with the owner of the laptop not being particularly computer savvy, I don't want them being conned into having to pay for it.

You might want to take a look at the following

http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/retrospective-test

In particular the proactive and the summary reports, ms doesn't fair too well.

Bitdefender or kaspersky do best, if you bank with barclays online you can get kaspersky for free, other banks & building societies may also offer free av too and no I don't work for barclays or any av software company.
