Can't find WiFi settings or device on my laptop?

I haven't been able to find the PCMCIA slot hes referring to. I'm relatively new to laptops but surely if it had such a slot it would be obvious to see from looking at the laptop?

I can't find anything about that model on the Medion website, but I did find another forum where a user listed the specifications of the machine and he did mention PCMCIA so I guess it has to be there. It may be behind a flap.

I would be really suprised if the laptop didnt have a PCMCIA slot! Every laptop I have ever owned, used and seen has had at least one!

As for the WiFi enabled thing, I would check for ANY kind of WiFi software because if it is there the seller wasn't technically wrong if not a complete git.

If there is nothing then you certainly have a case against him and my first step would be to email and ask him about it! He may have listed it as WiFi enabled either not knowing what it means or he was using a WiFi card which he has subsequently removed. Either way you should get something back from him!

If he isn't very forthcoming file a complaint with eBay.

Was that spec taken from a website, or is it an actual spec taken from your PC using some software?

If the latter it seems you do have wireless but obviously don't know how to use it!

If the former then it might be a case of the wireless adapater being removed - if it was an add-in card.

Not my laptop, got that from a website. Check under the laptop for any minipci slots that may be empty, might be under the keyboard too.

Finding the manufacturer specs of the model won't help you because this guys replaced the motherboard. I'm 100% certain the laptop doesn't have Wifi or even have a pcmcia slot with the mobo he put in it. Also the casing is shoddy and coming apart at the front even though the description said the casing was in excellent condition.

I sent the guy a message originally asking for a 10% refund which is a VERY good offer on my part and he gave me a sob story about not meeting his profit margins. Then he sent me another email saying he didn't have the cash but would get money through Paypal in 2 days, fair enough. Then a few minutes later bang he changes his mind and says "but I can get you a good offer on a Wifi device". Then he has the cheek to tell me that i'm better off than him for having this falsely advertised laptop

Sent him a reply demanding a full refund. I'm fully entitled to one as I paid through Paypal and his policy is a full refund within 7 days anyway. Forgetting the fact hes actually falsely advertised it. I'm not sure how the refund process works, do I have to speak to Ebay or do I just talk with the seller about it?

Have you checked that the wifi device (if installed) is not disabled in the BIOS, that would stop the software you use from detecting it.

It just goes to show, you need to ask questions of the seller before making assumptions.

Everyone knows when you make an assumption, you make an ass out of you and umption.

I would go for the full refund via paypal - File a complaint to bypass the seller's weaseling and excuses, and let the normal Paypal process sort it out.

Well you could count XP SP2 as having WiFi software installed. But it still does make something enabled. It's like having a DVD player package installed, but no drive - you would advertise it as being able to play DVDs surely?

btw, hi everyone

I find it unlikely that he has replaced the motherboard. It's not as if you can just slot any old board in.

They are usually specifically designed for each laptop and the case so all the ports fit.

By the way this is already in Networks and should not be cross posted

Some laptop model families motherboards do fit into other cases of the same family and some might not have all the features of others, have seen chassis without wireless or minipci that have the cover at the bottom that can be removed etc.. but don't have anything at all under them.
