Can't get 5.1 sound working correctly on pc

Ive tried everything mate. My reciever is getting PCM but only outputting it in stereo even though all the settings are put to 5.1. When i do the test, all five speakers are registering as they should but i think i need dolby live to have games and such work in true 5.1

dont think so...if the speaker test shows the receiver is receiving 5 separate channels and can output 5....then its a matter of using content that outputs 5 channels...often games have to be configured to output 5 channels.

I understand what your saying. I thought the same thing. The games ive tried, which are all AAA Modern games are only outputting in stereo. Dolby Digital Live is apparently there to change that to 5.1. The only thing really outputting in 5.1 PCM are things like DVD's and BluRays. Im only getting this by reading other people posts on other forums.

If you're getting multi channel PCM from DVDs etc, then the receiver is capable. Unless I've missed something, I thought nothing was outputting as multi PCM, or the receiver was just receiving stereo.

Anyway, if it's working as expected for DVDs, then really games should be working as well.

You're definitely getting PCM then when playing a DVD? It's not showing Dolby Digital?

Ok. First of all it turns out im very stupid when it comes to sound. I did not try and DVD, i just heard that DVD's output in 5.1 and games do... Turns out games do output 5.1 and i wasnt actually using PCM with HDMI. I was positive i was as there are no other settings. I just tried it there after setting up the 5.1 again and it works perfectly with all the games i previously tried with it not working. Im not sure what i was doing wrong before. Looks like i may have to send back the sound card. Is there any point in keeping it now ? PCM is better than dolby, isnt it ?

Better than Dolby Digital, yes, because PCM is lossless, or uncompressed if you like. Dolby Digital is compressed, as that is the only way 6 audio channels can be sent via SPDIF (coaxial/optical).

Glad you got it working, bit of bummer that you already ordered the sound card.

No point keeping the Omni for DDL use, so unless it will be good for other uses, then might as well just return it.

Thanks for all your help. Could have been a lot easier if i just done that in the first place ;) i had no idea what PCM was so maybe thats why ! Probably will order a new wireless headset instead with the refund. I was looking at the new corsair one but ive been seeing mixed reviews. The logitech G930 looks good. Any idea about wireless headsets ?

No problem. :)

I know what it's like to eventually get something done, and you think to yourself afterwards, 'if I only I'd have done that sooner'. :p Hindsight. Live and Learn, n' all that. :D

Can't help you with which wireless headsets to consider, because personally I don't rate wireless headsets or headphones; at least not the more affordable ones. You've got to pay a lot more than wired because so many more components are involved. Whatever you pay, there is always a wired pair cheaper and better.

Yeah i know what you mean. I have Astro A40's but either one of the cables or the mixamp is playing up. Just looking for something wireless with alright audio. Wires have been annoying me recently ;) i have my audio engines and my now working 5.1 for my quality audio :D

Some ppl say that the surround sound performs better with dd / dts bit streaming...i have found this not to be the case...(onkyo 800 series)..the massive advantage of hdmi/uncompressed pcm is that other sounds dont get lost because the receiver has switched to a dd/dts mode...used to really anoy me that skype couldnt ring properly during a film..until i discovered pcm.
