Hi all i have an external linksys adsl modem wich can be connected to my computer by either usb or ethernet. up until now i have been using the usb connection but would like to change to ethernet, as i have heard this is faster. so i unpluged the usb cable plugged in my ethernet cable, turned on my pc and nothing happened did not show the connection  Sorry if this is a silly question but i dont do networking, any help would realy be appriciated. if its any help my spec is in my sig.

hi...is it the adsl2mue modem?

have you tried deleting your previous connection in your network connections folder?, i think this was the problem when my dad got one...he then restarted and ran the network connection wizard selecting the lan connection (i think) as its ethernet to the modem, then go into the modem settings via internet explorer(usually http://192.168......the manual should say)and set up the modem to dial the isp with your username etc.
make a restore point just in case it goes wrong!
regards,
steve.

hi,
damn :(
can you get into your modem settings and are they correct? also check which option to use in the network connections wizard.....the wrong one can throw you off completely...

or try...
deleting current network settings,
restart pc and configure modem on new ethernet connection, check the modem lights all come on and an adsl connection is established.
open the network connection wizard and create a new connection (always on/lan....i think) make sure the network adapter you are using (onboard or pci adaptor?)is selected in network connection options/properties.
go into tools/internet options/connections and select never dial a connection for ie to work.
sorry i cant be 100% helpful..im stuck at work and trying to remember this all off the top of me head!
regards,
steve.

Thanks for trying to help Muzzler. But i now think the problem is with my on board marvell yukon gigabit lan adapter, it does not show up in my network connections. been trying to install new drivers but it does no good. have looked in device manager and for some reason it has a microsoft driver but it wont let me unistall it just says failed this device may be needed for the computer to boot(or somthing along those lines). Thought it might help to disable it in the bios first but there is no mention of lan adapters in the bios?? Is there any way i can force windows to uninstall the device??? or is it just borked. Sorry to be a pain :( but i am getting realy annoyed  SILLY MOTHER BOARD.

Has anyone else with a ds4 had the same problem???????

Make sure you get the correct drivers for the network card preferably from the support page at gigabyte. Previous attempts to get an unrecognised marvell chip working caused me so much grieve I installed a cheap pci card instead.

Have you power cycled the modem with the Ethernet cable connected...this should swap from USB to Ethernet
