ive been trying for the fast few weeks to get the ihs off a couple of chips and im having no joy

at first i thought i needed a smaller knife

so ive got a craft knife, its the thinneswt knife ive ever seen

and i still cant cut through, ive read the guide to doing it but, all i see is it being cut through, with a shot from above, i need to see a shot from the side to see if im missing something. i cant get a thinner knife and ive even tried putting a chip in the oven to warm the silcone to see if it helped

im stuck and well fed up

any help would be great

its hard to break the seal first of all.
you have to be firm in sinking the knife into the corner, but control that firmness so it doesnt shoot into the silicone too deep

I'd agree with above, you need a razor blade, craft knives are just too thick.

I broke apart a safety razor and then wrapped tape round one end of the blade. Took a few minutes and all was well.

Also helps to lubricte it with some methalated spirit or IPA as it makes it much easier.

I would check the stepping of your chip and see if any overclock any better with it removed as most dont get much more with it removed

Double edged razor, taped off so only 5mm of metal is showing, lid removed no problems on my 170. I tried a scalpel on my 165 and scraped the pcb killing the chip...be VERY carefull.

was that a 3800 venice or a X2 3800?

Shame about not being able to get the IHS off Turbo. Did you try using a razor blade?

Agent.

was a venice, yep got a razor blade, took to chips off the 3800 so knacked that, watched the dfi video and followed that, its not advisable to follow that video as he cuts quite deep, which is what i did

Yup, i've head he was a bit over keen to penitrate the chip.

Maybe he takes his comuting too far and thought the chip was a lady... The rest is upto your imaguination...

But shame about the 3800 man. The way to look at is now you know how deep to cut in. If you look in the IHS removal stick you can see my chip and how shallow you've gotta cut in, max of about 5mm, if even that.

Anyways, if you really don't wanna try it then far call. But i'd enourage you to try it on your FX.

Agent.

Lol

Im not finding it much better with ihs off as i did with my 170 with ihs on. Temps are a bit cooler on the fx but im guessing thats more to using a ninja now instead of xp120 rather than ihs removal. Have settled for 2.9ghz at 1.392v rather than push to 3ghz and put up with the extra heat (50 load (3ghz) rather than 42 (2.9ghz) from nearly 1.5v (although agent you could prob get away with that with the fan you strapped to your chip)
