Can't get my CPU to cool down!

If it's a work computer from a decent supplier just sort it out under warranty, I wouldn't waste time faffing about with it.

It's a huge waste of my time though to get it sorted under warranty. Being without a computer for any length of time. Reinstalling all my software...the list goes on. Hell just putting in all my website passwords again is a major faff.

Especially if there is nothing "wrong" with it, if its just posting incorrect temps. I mean it seems to function fine?

this could just be down to bad sensors? or bios integration.
let face it nothing looks right?
all the volts are wrong 3.3 5 and 12, its reading temp 2 as -7. if you look at the speeds the cpu is ruuning at 3.5ghz on 3 cores all the time? so that not dropping to idea speeds.

I would say update bios is step one here

Have you tried AMD Overdrive for temp monitoring ?

OK I did it.

Prepare to be scared by these temps on HWmonitor....
I only kept going for as long as I did (lets say 4 mins) because it said here - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html that "As long as you stay within thermal margins the CPU won't throttle and it is perfectly safe...

Anyway, make what you want of this. I don't really understand thermal margin or what any of this means any more. That max temp on HWMonitor thou :p

Your heatsink can't be on right. I don't know fif you've put it on incorrectly, or if there is a manufacturing issue with it, but that is what it adds up to. High temps and the heatsink not feeling hot = insufficient contact.

Have you checked the thermal paste to see if it has spread out properly or transfered onto the heatsink? It won't have done if there is little contact.

Oh, and stop stress testing before you break it. :p

Honestly trust me it is. The stock one definately was because the paste was perfectly spread upon removal. And I know I installed the new one right.

Maybe furmark is particuarily stressfull because I just ran the CPU stress on CPU-Z and my thermal margin stayed at 30 degrees.

I also read elsewhere

"Under load
Thermal margin of 10c+ is acceptable
20c+ is excellent."

Also at Idle I am getting a thermal margin of 62 degrees. Which is exactly the same as in the picture on that tomshardware guide. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html

Maybe its all OK then? I'm a lot happier with this AMD overdrive thermal margin data than I was with HWMonitor. And that site again say HWMonitor not to be trusted with AMDs

Perhaps. It might just be reporting temps incorrectly. Try downloading a different temperature monitoring program.

Coretemp?

What are the temps under Fan Control in Overdrive ?

Notthing there in fan control, just greyed out.

I really am much happier now. I've again found people saying for AMD

"ultimately trust overdrives thermal margin over any 3rd party software.
Ultimately during a prime test above 10c is decent ,above 20c is absolutely excellent."

"For AMD CPUs since the Bulldozer, it is best to use AOD. AMD has a problem with their thermal sensors reading accurately sometimes. I have had several of their CPUs over the last few years and all were... flaky."

With CPU-Z stress I was getting a thermal margin of 25 degrees and with Furmark I was getting 15 degrees.

So all seems well?

If your happy with it then who cares?

Me personally though, I wouldn't be happy with the issues you have had with it so far. I would want to get to the bottom of it properly.

I think the "bottom of it" is that AMD CPU's don't mesh well with HWMonitor. All the recommendations are to use AMD OD. Which I have done. And my readings are good if not great.

End of the day this is my work PC and it will mostly be running powerpoint, outlook and excel. I'll do some basic video editing but no gaming.

At least I have a new, prettier CPU cooler to look at through the side window now :D

Dont forget the Bios temp reading is under partial load, not idle. My bios temp is 42 degrees, where as my windows idle temp is 17 degrees which is only 3 or 4 degrees above my current room temp. So if your bios temp is reading 41 degrees then your windows temps are reading wrong. I would update the bios and your mobo drivers.

Never had a recent AMD chip, but sounds like it is all okay and that standard temp monitors don't understand your AMD chip.

Keep the marshmallows and toasting fork for later :D

I'm actually really happy with this comp.
Bit off topic but good story.
My work got all new Pc's and I begged my boss to let me get my own. She let me. So everyone else ended up with Dell's with i3, 4gb ram and on board graphics.
For exact same money I managed to spec a 7700k, 8gb ddr3 and an nvidea GTX950!
Not bad eh!
If I had been allowed to buy from overclockers I would have been able to spec it even better. Probably an i5 but I had to get the bits from works approved supplier.
