My mate's laptop refuses to go out of safe mode. We've done a diagnostic - the one that appears when you load up. Nothing happened and it has remained in safe mode.

Are we missing something obvious?

We've done the usual "reboot" etc.

The laptop is running on Windows Vista.

In Safe Mode run MSCONFIG and see if you can set it to Normal Startup. Click Apply. It should stay set at that. Then click OK and reboot.

Yesterday I couldn't get my laptop out of Selective Startup using MSCONFIG in "normal" mode. Had to go back into Safe Mode to do it [no clue why!]. Stuck in Safe Mode problem came up when searching for my issue and the solution was pretty much the same.

We just looked at that and because it is in safe mode, the graphics are all a bit odd so it is hard to see if anything is checked. We are trying something now and it should be what you suggested. Don't think we saw "Normal setup".

Will update in a sec.

Just noticed that we actually put on safe boot by ticking the box, thus highlighting the options beneath "safe boot", ah.

Ahhh just found "normal startup". Hang on! :D

Edit: No. :(

Still the same.

Media test failure...so perhaps graphics card driver?

What's the full error message? Media Test Failures are usually related to dodgy HDD or CD/DVD-ROM

That is all it really said.

It does seem that his laptop doesn't have any display drivers and after a google for his laptop: PB ARES GP2W, i can't seem to get anywhere.

We've just tried to boot it from last known working config. and it has done nothing.
